Do shop around, I found 100% difference between dearest and cheapest quotes, huge variation

I found s&n quite dear when i was pricing for my granite window cills, don't know how they compare for worktops etc but i'd ring and email around lots of places with your spec.

Try Robinson's in Malahide Road Ind Estate, found em good value and they know their stuff. A lot of the granite companies will be quiet enuf with less apartments/houses being built, cash is king. I rang the North, but didn't find em any cheaper than down here, (thats a first !)

If you going for an undermounted sink, I found some will throw the sink in FOC if you haggle.

When prepping food, avoid lime juice, can affect granite

+1 on the avoidance of lime juice. In face try to avoid all citrus acids, as they can damage the granite. I would be vey careful about lighter coloured granites (even though the brighter colours are far nicer than the boring and hard to keep black granites)and make sure they are well sealed. Without being sealed properly I have seen granite being stained by a bag of chips left on it for 2 mins while plates were being prepared.

Another point to take into consideration, I see a lot of talk in this and other forums about cost. Yes, by all means look for the best VALUE, but not the lowest cost! Granite is all the same ok, but selection of slabs and templating, and fitting isn't. I have worked with many companies in my business, and found very few good suppliers. And the good ones weren't particularly cheap. I know people on here will have a bottom line in mind but I strongly believe that you should not compromise on quality.

I have stood in a kitchen where the job done was so bad that the granite worktops had to be broken out of a kitchen and replaced by another supplier all at cost to the customer.

I suppose what I am saying in this rambling mess is that I think people need to do a bit of research, get guarantees, see previous work etc, and not just pick the guy that got a nice cheap container of stone in from Brazil or China.
You should also be able to pick your slab in the stone yard, as every slab is completely different. So if you pick from a slab from a small sample the actual fitted piece is quite likely to be very different.

Best of luck with your purchase! :)

Kev Arno gives good advice here. Cheapest is not always the best in the long run but you will get very good value for money out there now. Make sure you are pricing like with like in terms of granite thickness and whether or not upstands have been included. Granite is a good choice as is quartz for your worktop.
