Looking for a new laptop

    hi guys,

My dell M1710 laptop just died, grahphics card is broken and it's too costy to get a new one. Kinda sick of it and just want to get a new one altogether.
Just looking to surf the web, watch movies and type documents, not really looking for a powerhouse gaming laptop at all, which the 1710 was back in the day.
As i'm using it to watch movies a lot, a 17' screen would be preferable, but I'm willing to go down to 15' if the price is right.

Looking to spend up to €800 maximum on it. I would usually just go straight to dell but i'm hearing some negative things about them lately so thought I'd ask on here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Yeah, new tech is always fun.

Toshiba can be cost effect but IMO have no "Va va voom". Sony on the other hand Arent cheap but are pretty snazy. The basic Vaio is 600 so 800 should get you a decent unit.

Ps: If your looking to recycle the 1710 I'd be happy to oblige :p

Sony are also fairly unreliable in my experience. I fix a lot of laptops for family (unpaid of course :( ) and I must say Sony (just ahead of Toshiba and Advent) laptops tend to have the worst problems out of the whole lot. Maybe the Sony's are just too delicate for my family.

In my opinion you can't really go too far wrong with a bog standard Dell, the Studio 17's look quite good. Currently eyeing up one to replace my current 6 year old inspiron and trying to pester Dell to let me pay the Sterling price instead of the Euro.

The only complaints I've heard about the Studio 17 is the lower res screen is a bit crap but the 1920x1080 screen is meant to be great (just not available in Ireland yet, another thing I've to try and get around). The smaller studio 15 is apparently prone to overheating so worth considering if you tend to use the laptop in bed or other places where something is likely to block an air vent.

Same could be said for inspiron but I have to agree on the Studios though. Lovely machines.

Theres a studio 17 with decent all-round specs and the i5-520M for €859 at the moment.

As far as I know the core i7 version of the studio 15 has overheating issues, the i3 and i5 chassis is capable of handling the heat generated by the processor.
