What bike to buy

Hi all surprise surprise first post.
At work they are promoting the cycle to work scheme but we're limited to Halfords and Victoria Cross Cycles in Cork.
Have heard terrible things about Halfords customer service while googling.
Just looking for impartial advice re what bike to buy and where to go.
Budget is entry level between 300 and 550.
Looking for a roadbike or maybe a hybrid similar to a road bike.
Was thinking of the Carrera Gryphon in Halfords seems reasonable at 380.
The bike would be used to commute to work when weather allows and I am going to do a couple of triathlons for the first time this year as the legs are getting too old for this football lark.
Not sure would it be better to stick to the big brands at the cheap end or the cheaper brands with possibly a better spec for the money.

Any advice you all could give would be very gratefully accepted as Ive been surfing for the last few days and am still unable to come close to a decision.
    P.S. Sorry for long message
