    Hello all, first post...

Basically I was living in oz for 6 months, came back due to illness and I was on disability benefit here. I got better, started claiming dole and then got a job and off I went. Now it looks like this place is about to go under and I don't see anymore work coming and I was just about to move out of my folks home. So what I'm wondering is, if I'm at home in the folks place and want to move out, can I move out and claim rent allowance?

    Thanks!

    I doubt it.

To get rent supplement you must be renting in private accommodation for at least 6 months.

So does that me there is no way to get rent allowance and move out, you have to stay at home? What if you're on it long term, like 6 months plus?

    Thanks btw!

The link provided in post #2 is pretty explanatory. Have you read it?

    don't worry about asking questions

Apply to your local council to get on the council house waiting list. But it will take you a while to get assesed and even then you might not be elegible

What is the criteria to be elegible? Am I right in saying I would have to wait a few years to get it and in the mean time I can get rent allowance?

You can't get rent supplement while you are still working.

You could rent a place now and pay for it yourself for the next 6 months and if you are then unemployed claim rent supplement or

if you are unemployed 12 months (and living at home) then you would be able to claim without the 6 month private accommodation rule. or

As Bob rightly pointed out, the housing list factor.

I'll let Bob answer the eligibility for the housing list but I do now you wouldn't be able to claim rent supplement until you were assessed and approved to get on the list. How long it takes to be assessed, I don't know.

Thanks, I will be out of here the end of August, found out today, so not enough time, if I have to wait 12 months all well and good, but if there is another way with the housing end of things that would help.

Actually Ridge, I mis-read the part about being eligible for rent supplement if you are unemployed 12 months. That was referring to something else.

Seeing if you are eligible for the housing list might be your best option so if your not able to afford paying the full rent from Sept-Dec when your unemployed.

To get a council house yes you would have to wait a few years maybe more but if you apply for a council house and get on the waiting list then you can get rent allowance

another option I would imagine is to get the cheapest place you can for 6 months and pay rent then move into a better place and apply but that still doesn't mean you will automatically get it(and I don't know atone who has done this). If you are able to live at home with your parents they might reject you(the health board not your parents)
