A few running questions

    I'm hoping someone can give me some info.

    1. Can anyone recommend a 5 mile run route in Waterford City.
    2. Can anyone give me some pearls of wisdom on how to deal with a stitch and, ideally, how to avoid them in the first place.
    3. Breathing.... What is the right way and the wrong way. I physically cannot breath in through my nose and out my mouth. :eek: Is this the prefered way to get oxygen into your lungs?

    At the moment one of the runs I do, is up the big hill (big for me!) past the park and Waterpark School - I am fine doing it, but when I get to the top I am killed and gasping for air, it takes me a few mins to recover and during that time I am barely "bopping" and then I'm grand to take off again.

    Advice greatly welcomed! I have been running a good while, and my aim at the moment is the 10k run in September. I am running 6k comfortably and want to increase it to approx 8k (around 5 miles?).

    Jedi, First off well done on getting as far as you have. It looks like you're making good progress and the 10km sounds like a good target. I can't help on number 1, but as regards number 2 the best way of avoiding a stitch that I've been able to work out is to make sure I have a fairly empty stomach when I run. From my limited understanding of these things it's the movement of fluids or food inside that can trigger a stitch. I know you can't be completely empty but I certainly wouldn't eat anything substantial for a couple of hours before a run.

    On the breathing side of things I don't believe there is a 'correct' way to breath. I've always done whetever came naturally which normally means through a gaping mouth. It ain't pretty at times but it's all about getting as much air in and out as quickly as you can. Personally, I wouldn't try to adjust my breathing from what felt most natural and easiest.

    Gaping mouth! haha, You should see the faces I pull at times!

    I alwasy run after work at 6pm... so I wouldnt have eaten since lunch time - 1pm. However I would have a banana (or a biscuit) for energy at around 4:30 or 5.
    Maybe I should leave that out!

    I don't know Waterford at all, but if you look on mapmyrun you can see runs that other people have stored, there's a few hundred at that link up to 10k long.

    Hi Jeidi,

    One 5 mile option in the city is to go from People's Park, up the Newtown Road, out to Ardkeen, left onto the outer-ring road past WLR, on through the Williamstown roundabout, turning right at Kilcohan roundabout, and on down through Johns Park down Johns Hill, Ballytruckle Road and onto Catherine Street, and up the Mall, back up Newtown Road, finishing at the People's Park.

    I'm not sure about a stitch, but people say to drop your hands when you get one :confused: I found once I built up distance, sitiches became a thing of the past (in saying that, you can be sure I've just jinxed myself, and I'll suffer one later!).

    Best of luck with the plan - is it the WLR Fun Run you are aiming for? It was my first ever race last year, and I really enjoyed it.

    When Running hills be sure you get into habit of running at least 20meters after hill (no matter how slow you have to go) before you slow to walk-- it trains body and mind not to fear the hill and as you get fitter and stronger you will no longer worry about hills.


    hope this helps a little cant help you with 5miler in Waterford dont know the area Mapmyrun doesnt have much on waterford --yet, just the half- marathon route I think ..but should be of help to you

    when i get a stitch i slow down and breathe deep, and exhale through pursed lips. works for me.

    Few Group runs around the city

    19.00 Tuesday from 5 miles to 8 - RSC
    09.30 Sat morning from the Woodlands Hotel

    Also the "Glass Factory" field out beside the swimming pool on the Cork Road is a KM so eight laps of that will give you your five and take you of the road if required.

    There are also sessions on the track regularily with WAC just check it out and you will meet somebody down there in the know.

    Monday and Weds about 19.30 - 19.45 start

    Thanks everyone for the info! Will have a good look at all the links!

    I have always walked/jogged the 10k fun run but this year my aim is to run it all. I missed it the last two years due to being pregnant, and then having a new born, so this year will be a big achievement for me.


    And there is a 10 mile run in October I think? Oh I can only dream!

    I thought everyone did the same thing as I do when they get a stitch - breath out ALL THE WAY and press on the sore spot, while continuing to run/jog as fast as is comfortable. I think a stitch is all about not exhaling properly, rather than about food/liquid (which can of course cause bellyaches).

    Or maybe I'be been doing it wrong all this time..
