Whisper Phone App - free calls to US, too good to be true?

Missus downloaded Whisper Phone today, its free, you register for free and it allocates you a number (similar to a US number) and you can call US numbers for free over wifi (not tried it with 3g) and of course whisper-whisper for free. other international numbers you need to buy credit for. only downside with the free version is you have to listen to an ad before your call connects.

I cant see a downside yet, and as the missus has family over there this could keep her bills down.

anyone else use this? wheres the catch?

Wow!!! The "catch" just seems to be that they play a short advert to you before your call is connected. This is an amazing App for calling free to the USA, well done 120. I downloaded it, rang a hotel in Florida and got through. And like the OP stated, you get your own number. So if you're heading to the States you have your own regular Irish number but also a US phone number, you just have to open the App to receive calls from home or the Staes, I've just tried it and it's fine.

For iPhone users in a free wifi area get this now, if you have any buddies/family in the states this is a joy. For once, it does what it says on the tin. Free calls to the USA. Thanks again for the heads up.

Does it work if you are calling a US cell phone? or is it just for land lines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,706 ✭✭✭120_Minutes

yes, works on both mobiles and landlines!

i found one small flaw, it has a forwarding service if you dont have the app on. you nominate a number to forward to, but i cant get it to work with irish numbers.

if anyone figures it out, let me know.

You might be able to help a little so :)

I followed these points below to configure the settings:

    * Open up your Whistle phone

    * Click the 'Existing Account' configuration option

    * You will be prompted to enter your existing Whistle phone number. Enter the number in the text box and click 'Save'

    * After you have saved your Whistle phone number, you will be prompted to enter your authentication password. This is the same password that you login to your account page with.

    * Enter in your password and click 'Authenticate'

    * Your account should successfully authenticate.

    * Once you have authenticated your account, you will be able to use Whistle to place and receive phone calls.

I get to the 5th point but I am not prompted to enter my authentication password. I can get a dial tone, enter a number (617 *** ****) but nothing happens.

    Any tips/help?

Not sure what's going on there. I just downloaded, registered, checked gmail in my phone, clicked on activation link and made a call minutes later. Hope this helps.

If you were contacting a skype client, you could use Fring on your iPhone, also as a Skype client. For free with no ads!!. You would however need credit to call a landline obviously. It works fine for me over Wifi, didn't try it over 3G.

    Just another option.

Just downloaded this app. I tried it out and rang one of our US offices... and it worked. This app is pure class !! That was a great find from 120.

There's nothing they can do to stop you!

Americans pay to receive calls on mobiles, which is why you can reach them from free services.

Sorry, I should have posted my reply. It eneded up being the wireless network i was on in work. it was blocking the port or proxy that the app was using. Works fine on my home network now though.

I find that the 3g can be a bit siht at times for this though (just like skype 2.0). It works best over wifi...

Still no joy, you're right,3G is a bit crap!

If I call an American mobile does it still cost them money to recieve the call? My friends are over there now on j1's but don't think they'd be too happy to pay extra if I call them.
