A couple of Quangos later we will see it in a few years.

It's badly needed for years now since the requirement to carry the licence at all times when driving - but no doubt - some highly paid consultants will have to re-invent the wheel on this one?
My current 4 year old licence is in tatters as I drive different cars and bikes.

Yeah, I know, but at least it's finally getting started. My paper one's in shyte from always carrying it

This is good news but I hope we don't end up with a two part licence like the UK where you need to bring the paper part to hire a car or anything like that. If your licence has seen better days, changes of address are free ;).

Good point.. wtf can't we have a plastic ID card that is license, passport, Tesco card and everything?

About time, they should also have it so it can be used for integrated ticketing on public transport, one card you can go by car or public transport without the need for tickets.

will it be a card like the us ones

Zurich/Eagle Star have had plastic 'credit card' type insurance certificates available for years............for staff

    Dead handy :D

    Great idea for the licence

Because within about a year, its envitable a MASSIVE security hole would be found in the implementation, and someone behind the counter in Tesco could steal your identity (or your Xtravision account, depending on whim) when giving you your points...

Either way, all we need to do here is implement the newer EU standard - our existing licence is the previous one and is hence identical to older Dutch, German, etc licences. Shouldn't take long or cost money, its just been a lack of will to do it until now.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I remember vaguely the last time the credit card license was announced by a minister. Was it about 7-8 years ago and was it just after whatever agency issues them had just spent a fortune buying machines that print the old style ones? Were there giggles from the people in the know?

    Someone please remind me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,680 ✭✭✭mondeo

So we will all have to send in our paper license and they will post out plastic ones.....Nice! But I wonder how much of an admin fee they will charge us.....
Their bound to make a spinner out of it. 10 euro a pop or something.

I'll pay ten euro for a better licence!!!!!

I would rather see them developing them to be self sufficent and costing the exchequer nothing to be honest.

The old style ones shouldn't need anything more than a flatbed dot matrix printer to print, these cost about €350 ex VAT in bulk....

mondeo - its extremely unlikely they'll do a big bang replacement. Keep the paper one til it expires, get the plastic one. Would be an idea to replace a paper one early if you get a new ten year one just as the plastic comes in, if only to prevent serious hassle driving abroad when its close to expiry!

With a bit of luck they'll do what they did with the passports and put in the micro chips with all your details on them so they can't be replicated or turned to fraud.

and there better fit in the card pocket in my wallet ! :pac:

I know that since the introduction of Driver CPC for bus and HGV drivers, about 2 years ago, that the RSA were hinting at this. This (possible) new card was to have the licence, CPC history, and drivers card ( for digital tachographs ) all in one. You do bold in one country in Europe, you're boldness is found out instantly in another.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes years before any driving licence card will come into being

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,155 ✭✭✭✭Berty

For those of us who travel outside of the country. It will finally mean no raised eyebrows when hiring a car or getting stopped by cops.

    I have been asked

"Are you kidding me son?" by a deputy in Georgia in the US

    In Australia

    "Is this real?"
    "Yes, why?"
"Why do you think, JUST LOOK AT IT"

    We both laughed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,410 ✭✭✭old_aussie

Yeah Berty we've had the plastic ones in Oz for about 20 years.

Unrestricted Driver licence (Gold) & National Heavy Vehicle Driver licence (Magenta) $47 for 1 year, $113 for 3 years, $151 for 5 years

Unrestricted drivers licence (Gold) $151 for 5 years, about 102.5 Eur.

Fits in wallet just nice and doesn't fall apart like paper.

Plus they can be used for identification/proof of age to get into clubs and pubs.

Get yourself a leather licence holder, I got mine in Dublin airport but I'm sure they're available elsewhere, keeps licence clean and tidy and seems to impress plod when you give it to them

The Irish way would mean it would not only have a credit card size but also a credit card function.
    And yes... slightly too big.

There are still plenty of non-credit card licences in circulation in other EU countries that haven't expired yet that are just the same as the one we have currently. The Netherlands, for example, only went over to credit card licences in October 2006 so there'll be plenty of them around until at least 2016 when they expire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,141 ✭✭✭Yakuza

Mine is due to expire next year, hopefully they'll be out by then. ( The cynic in me demands I not hold my breath). My license is in decent nick, however, as I bought a wallet in Spain that has a fold-out section that was designed for it.

    I can't wait for a credit card-sized one, however.

I have a plastic driving licence but it is about double the credit card size and it will expire 2047 :) Finnish licence actually, I got it at 1996.

Id imagine the duration of the licenses will be reduced now. The Oz ones go up to 5 years, and ive seen a lot of 2 to 3 year old ozzie card licenses in bits. Think the plastic is just a bit too brittle.

I know that sounds crap but you do get fake licenses over here but when they put the chips into the passports it actually had an affect on that because all the details and picture were saved into the chip.

I just thought it would help a lot.... or if you dont like it its very easy for someone to use your details with their picture on the license

These were dead handy, I got one with my policy from them in 2007 but never again, called them in '08 and they said it had been discontinued.

It's about time we got a proper card licence. I wouldn't be holding my breath for them to get their arses in gear in a hurry though.

    Exactly :)

People's faith in technology like this is heart-warming, but very, very misplaced, IMO. Anyway, back on topic...

They're not so late this time the Irish.

    Wiki Link

They had to wait until the format was agreed upon at EU level so that was the end of 2006.

Then there's the issue of not wanting to be the first. Lets let some of the other states get the cards and we can see if there are any potential problems. Plus at this stage prices should be cheaper for the readers and at supplier level.

And we're well behind the deadline of 19 January 2013.

3 weeks for the tendering process seems a little short though no?

In other words, somebodies nephew already has a proposal ready to go, so they're setting the process impossibly short to make it look like they're trying, when realistically only so and so's nephew will have enough time to get his proposal in.

I see you've engaged the tendering process already!

Just renewed my licence this year so all going well I'll be renewing it in 10 years.
New licence types should be in by that stage but with this government, you'd never know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭srfc19

does anybody know if Tesco will be accepting the new licence, because even though I am allowed to control a car on the road with my pink licence it doesn't entitle me to purchase a couple of bottles of beer!

It will be the standard euro licence from euro legislation thank god most of the work has been done for them already

Is this part of the penalty points scheme so if you're done for speeding the UK or NI you don't get away with no points anymore?

It's about time they got it sorted. I wonder if they'll charge for exchanging the licenses or if you'll be able to get your license then and there when applying.

The current setup is stupid. My license is in tatters from keeping it in my wallet. The laminate is peeling from the folds and it's held together with sellotape :o

My mate got done for defacing his license...he put it through a laminator, he got away with it provided he get a new one, and doesn't laminate it. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,339 ✭✭✭congo_90

About time! My licence is in bits from driving varous vehicles/ using it as id for pubs/clubs :p

On the upside the plastic card is harder to fake and sits in the wallet nicely.

I mean seriously.. A paper licence? Made using toilet paper and book cover from easons

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭robbie_998

    another thought on this

when it happens does it mean that no longer we need to get 2 passports photos and also can we get them from the tax office there and then.

getting a student travel card was easy and done in 5 mins and they did the pictures on a computer webcam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,366 ✭✭✭ninty9er

We've plastic ID cards at college, but they're looking at further advancing them and putting an RFID chip in, so it essentially can't be faked without having the original or access to the database.

Considering the driving licence doesn't have any function other than to prove you can drive, I don't see them going that far.

    Thats up to them.

    <offtopic>

If they refuse to accept a passport kicking up a fuss about treason usually works (despite it not being quite accurate) but not for a driving licence.

It was more hilarious when they demaned only Garda ID off someone TOO OLD TO GET ONE - the old scheme couldn't be got over 23/25 (not sure which). They also at one stage asked for this for getting smokes, despite it strictly being allowed to be used for purchase of alcohol only.

Heres an excerpt from the Citizens info website:

"In 2006 the European Commission approved the introduction of a single EU driving licence to replace those currently in use in the member states. It is expected the new EU driving licence will come into effect by 2012 and the driving licences issued by each member state will be phased out by 2032. This document explains the current situation regarding applying for or renewing a driving licence in Ireland."

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/motoring-1/driver-licensing/full_driving_licence

What gets me is it takes 20 years to phase them out.
