Chondromalacia (runners knee)? supposed to be doing cork marathon.

I am tapering down in my training for the Cork city marathon in about 10 days. I have gone from a peak of 18 miles down to 10 every day or two, but suddenly have pain under the inside of my kneecap - left hand side- for about the past week. Not bad (or even really that noticable) when I run but painful when going down stairs the next day. When I massage a point on the kneecap the tissue underneath is painful, tender and feels swollen.

Self-diagnosis on the net leads me to suspect that this could be Chondromalacia.

If it is it looks like there's no way I should do the marathon.

Anyone got experience/ advice about this?

    Any help really appreciated.

Go to a physio! Self-diagnosis can just as easily make it worse...

We're not allowed to offer medical advice on here, however, you should really get yourself to a physio to get a proper diagnosis.

IF it is runners knee I wouldn't rule out going ahead with the marathon just yet, you would be tapering now anyway and if it's not hurting you while running you might just be alright, you may have to readjust your goals though.

    Good luck. :)
