    hello,

just wondering if someone can give me some advice. im thinking of quitting my job, it is really affecting my health. . im in a different situation sort of.. I have worked here in my workplace almost 2 yrs, will be 2yrs in august, before that i lived my whole life in the US for 15 yrs in "undocumented status".... when i finished college i decided to move back to Ireland.. I have never worked in Ireland before.

My goal is not be on assistance for a year, just till whenever i find a job i have no plans to be on dole for a long time, just hoping to stay home and put all my effort to find something new... i cant even now really look for a new job because of my schedule i work in hospitality industry.. sometimes i work 10 days straight with no days off, i been hospitalized twice this year for chest pains/anxiety, when i finish my late shift i vomit when i walk home i just find the situation ridicolous and stressful, been on a holiday 2 weeks ago but it wasnt really a holiday because i was so upset that i have to return back to my place of work... im getting angrier and angrier everytime i come on my shift.. I think no job is worth this stress.. I live with my girlfriend, she doesnt work, i support herself also, i have no close family in Ireland, they all live in the States..

My question is will the officer be symphatetic a bit to my case, or will he tell me tough luck...I am a Irish citizen if the post doesnt make sense i just emigrated when i was a child.

Thanks for your help guys, hopefully someone can answer. Great boards BTW;)

If you have 2 years uninterrupted work and PRSI payments you should be ok. However, I would suggest you speak to your GP before you do anything else. You may be entitled to disability payments etc.

Thanks for the reply.. Unfortunetly i dont have 2 yrs contributions yet, it will be even 2 in August.. I kind of find it weird that you have to last 2yrs somewhere in a terrible workplace to get some kind of help/relief, even though the person is getting more sicker.. I think the best thing is to maybe have a chat with an Welfare Officer also? and see what his recommendation is

As Etho said talk to your GP first.

If I were you I would just quit that job and go straight down to you local community welfare officer. Apply for supplementary allowance for you and your girlfriend. As an Irish citizen you are entitled to jobseekers allowance but not benefit. Just tell them your job made you redundant. They don't bother trying to find out otherwise. I know this because my son did it.
Good luck. Don't forget the saying "you work to live, not live to work".

That is what not to do. Infracted.

    That is REALLY bad advice

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

So i guess the best advice out of this, is go again to GP explain her the situation..Instead of going to the welfare officer first?!

Yes, go see your GP. It is "better" to be signed off work and put on disability allowance as in most cases you'll get it a lot quicker than the means tested JSA. And of course your GP will be able to help you with the obvious psychological impact this situation is having on you.

Please listen to the advise above I was in similar situation had two weeks holidays aswell and they weren't holidays at all just felt sick the whole time anyway went to my gp who signed me off on disability I am now taking a case against my emloyers for bullying and harassment, its only now 9 months later that I feel back to somewhat good mental health and want to return to the work place
the main thing I learned is no job is worth putting your mental and in turn physical health in jeopardy
also get your girlfriend to go to the dole office and sign on as disability allowance is 196 p/w and two people cant live on that I know was supporting my partner too and had to send him down to sign on when i was signed off sick
best of luck and please seek help

Thanks for the replies, will make an appointment with my GP. At the beginning i thought oh it will pass im strong mentally, physically. People like this dont need goverment help

I guess things add up one by one if you dont take care of the core problem.. I guess im hitting the downward spiral with... hospitilazations, doctor visits, working sometimes 10 days straight, supporting girlfriend who cant find a job knowing that you may probably never see your parents, and unable to adjust to a country you basically dont know too much about after spending your whole life abroad.

I guess it also does not help when you get stressed out more with facts like that dont have enough contributions to get those benefits yet, etc.. After reading the posts it seems like its not so evil, if you really need help there is help.

First will see my GP,and speak with her although im pretty sure she is aware already of hospitalaztion and my past 6 month history. See what she will suggest. We will see thanks for all the help again;)

Yes this is BAD BAD advice. When I was made redundant and applied for Jobseekers benefit I had to bring a letter in from my employer stating that I had been made redundant. Can't understand how this man's son got away with that.

Just an update, went to GP..She said she would not allow me to go back to work..I didnt quality for Illness Benefit, I went to see the Inspector, he was very understanding and approved me straight away;)

Now i can sort myself out..Also when i went to work the first thing instead of asking me are you ok? how is your health? i was asked are you planning to sue us?!

Not sure how to pursue this but i will go speak to the union, and then take them for constructive dismissal

Do I understand you correctly. You have had to give up a perfectly good job because of your health (it happens) but now you are taking your former employers for constructive dismissal?????????????????

Surely that is just a bare-faced lie! I understand how you might have to give up a job that is making you ill, and you have to have your doctor’s confirmation of that, but to take your employer for constructive dismissal, is simply wrong. This country doesn’t need any more shiesterism – we have more than enough of that already!

Maybe im missing something..So i just ignore my employers violations of health and safety laws at the workplace, not being paid holidays, abuse/bullying?! Perhaps its my fault and i have missed the definition of constructive dismisal < i thought this has meant suing the crap out of them for all my pain and suffering:confused:

This is the first time you have mentioned violations of H & S legislation, not being paid, abuse & bullying. What do you expect people to think?

Sorry should of been more clearer.....:o

The doctor recommended if i can to get away a little bit from the situation take a short break somewhere, am i allowed to go on short holiday/break?! I couldnt find the answer for Disability Allowance regarding holidays?

I have to sympathise with your situation Brian131982, but I really don't think sueing them is going to do you any favours. Like you, I suffered from anxiety while working in my last job, but before I reached a nervous breakdown the company went into liquidation and now the boss that made my life hell for 2years, could face banruptcy or even beter, jail. But I suppose in a way that is justice for me.

I know you have suffered but were you the only one who experienced bullying and abuse? And as for not getting paid for holidays?? Why has the union not done anything about this? I just hope no-one has put this idea in your head for making a quick buck, because here is why:

You might damage your opportunity for future employment, THINK about it. The next interview you have, the interviewer will ask you where have you worked the last 2years? They will ask why have you NOT got a reference (Because your employer can now refuse to give a reference or give you a nasty one). And what was your reason for leaving there? When they will find out that you have put a claim in against your last employer they will most definitely see you as a liability.

You want revenge? I'm guessing its maybe a hotel you work in? BAD MOUTH the place - easy!! Get on every travel website and hotel advisory site and damage your ex-employers that way!

Illness Benefit is what you need information on and you can find it here:

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/disability-and-illness/disability_benefit

And, by the way, you don't owe anyone here any explanations of your choices or details of your situation. Use the good advice you have been given by some and let the others take a hike.

If a person starts a thread and comes on asking for advice but does not give everyone all the facts, what's the point?
