Belt failure (maybe)

I have a dodgy alternator andI have to get it replaced (for the second time) very soon. The problem is that the alternator is ceasing and the unit is getting very very hot. The car isn't charging correctly either.
Anyway, in the event of a ceasure or alternator failure, could the belt break?
What would happen if the belt just broke while driving? I know it is a bit pessimistic, but I was just curious.
    Thanks.
VW passat 1.9 Diesel B5.5 BTW.

To be honest, when the original failed I got a second hand one from the UK - now this is failing. I don't know but I can only assume that it is just bad luck that the second alt was not as good as I thought. Only other reason that I could think of is if one of the bearings on one of the pullys is bad, but that shouldn' cause the alt to cease....or should it?

Could beeeee! bad luck, but I am not so sure. Did you check to see what else it is driving? Why did you buy one from the UK? they are hardly that expensive over here, well from a scrappy anyway. You could also have yours maybe overhauled.Your drive belt could be too tight and that will ruin the bearings of it and anything else it is driving too.You could possibly buy a cheaper new one in the UK alright.

I can give you a number for a place to get a new Alternator, brand new and a hell of a lot cheaper than a main dealer!

Good man steve06 - I'm all for that, cheers !!
@ Jimmyw - the last alternator I got was from the UK and had a 30 day guarentee - now expired by abouth a month. Anyway, the steering and water pumps (i think) are driven by the belt. I'll have to bring it to my mechanic anyway at the weekend.

Are these 2 working ok? Belt tension?

They seem fine, she is at the doc today so I'll know more later. Dropped it off yesterday at my mechanic's and there was a smell of burning from the alternator. I just hope that there isn't something else causing the alternator to cease. I assume that the belt is self adjusting.
