Windows XP Media Centre edition

I have suddenly just out of the blue developed problems with my soundcard on my pc. I have a window xp machine and an m-audio firewire audiophile soundcard. I'm still getting audio from Reaper and Reason but not for Ableton or any windows applications (e.g media player, or even audio from youtube etc.).
So naturally the first thing I did was update the soundcard driver, which didn't work so then I went onto the m-audio support section where I discovered that my particular version of windows XP does not officially support a whole range of audio related hardware and software and apparently loss of functionality is quite common and sometimes erratic.
Its explained in more detail here: http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/ts/detail.php?Index=30163&keyword=30163

Has anyone ever heard of this problem before? This is completely new to me and I just assumed I had Windows XP Home edition. This is a pretty big problem now for me and its probably gonna mean a change of OS which I would really like to avoid (because of financial and mental health reasons). Any advice? Or anyone with a copy of XP Home or Pro lying around?

Any possibility that some of the applications have reverted using the on board soundcard? On XP (normal) it's under Start | Control Panel | Sound And Audio Properties.

No I've checked all the sound and audio settings and they are still attempting to use the m-audio outputs. Its the same in Ableton. :(

I'd be very surprised if this was solely down to the version of XP you're using...I have used media centre in the past with no issues. To be 100% sure that it's not a driver conflict issue, try disabling your onboard in the BIOS.

Yeah I'd agree , I've had a lot of issues with onboard / addon soundcard issues and it usually arises from one checkbox somewhere set to the wrong soundcard.. You know there is not an issue with the addon soundcard as it is working with your DAWs.. TelePaul's idea is exactly what I do .,.. for every machine that I have that has two soundcards I ALWAYS disable the onboard in the BIOS.. It just creates ambiguity with audio applications if you dont.

You could of course wipe the slate, uninstall the lot, and reinstall after a reboot if the problem presists. As far as I'm aware there isnt a huge difference between the media center and regular windows aside from the interface..

Yeah I would have thought that there wouldn't be any difference between the windows versions but it seems that there is a history of problems exactly like mine.
I'll have a go at disabling the onboard soundcard in bios settings.
    Cheers for the suggestions.

Alas no joy. Switched it off in bios with no results unfortunately.

Sounds like some of the apps are locking the driver. For XP, check what's being used as the default sound type (44khz or 48khz) in Control Panel > Sound. It could be some apps are successfully using the driver and locking it at one of these wavelengths (e.g. 48) and the driver cannot operate at another (e.g. 44) simultaneously. When things stop working though always backtrack and think what has changed. Did you install anything new including XP hotfixes? Change anything yourself? You could also try completely un-installing and re-installing your driver. I have an unsupported driver for an old PCI card on Win 7 and I have to tell Cubase to release this if I want to use youtube or external apps simultaneously (slaving an app like Reason off is not a problem though).

Ok finally fixed it! Went into Ableton settings and changed the driver from ASIO 1/2 to ASIO multi and did the same in windows and it seems to have worked. Strange that it should all just cease working all of a sudden out of the blue and have to be reconfigured.
Thanks for the help anyway guys.
