Job prospects for tax trainees

I'm thinking of doing the tax technician 1 year course in october and was wondering if I would be wasting my time given the current climate. Does anyone know what the prospects of getting a trainee role are on completion of the course, is there currently a demand for people with this qualification? I was going to remain in the job im in while studying and wait until I finish with the qualification to start seeking a position as the fact I completed the course and paid myself may be in my favour, any thoughts? Also i'm in my 30's would this be too old to embark on a new career?
