    Hi Folks,

was out last night with people from work and one of them said that he uses a sky multi room box from his mothers house in his apartment. He said he just hooked it up to an old sky connection in his apartment. Could this possibly work? Surley sky must have something in place to stop this?

    Thanks,
    T.

Youd need an active viewing card but in theory it should work. Sky are clamping down big time on this tho; if the multiroom box isnt connected to a phoneline in the proper house I think it costs an extra €40 a month or something like that.

Yes this does work. I have a friend who pays the extra few quid to their Ma for the multi-room and its just hooked up to a Sky dish that was there when he moved in.

I AM AMAZED. Cant believe its as simple as that. The box in my mothers house isnt hooked up to a phone line. Does it need to be hooked up to a phone line in order to get multi room? Do they come out and run loads of cables about the house?

Reading up the t+c's. I'm a bit confused:::::::

"Each box you have must be connected to the same fixed telephone line at all times."

    Dont think it would work

The phone line is just so that they can verify your location. The box works fine without it. Sure its only a dish pointing at a satelitte; they have absolutely no way of knowing where you are (as far as I know anyway). Sure dont people sign up for Sky over here and bring the dish and box to their holiday homes in Spain?

i have sky+ without a phone line but ot cost an extra few quid when i was gettin it installed. dont know about multi room though. my cousin was tellin me that you can use someone elses multiroom to view that persons sky subscription thru an xbox. if you know someone generous enough to give you their multiroom number you dont need a dish or a box or anythin just your xbox and you dont have to watch what the other person watches.

You can get Sky Player using someone elses mulitroom account (I use my parents account to watch cricket in work) but there is a very limited selection of channels on Sky Player, and even what is there is restricted (cant watch The Simpsons on Sky1 for example). Its an option but not a very good one.

The free channels (over 200 TV and 70 radio) work with no card.

They CAN detect if a multiroom card is used at a different premises. Both cards need to be in boxes on the SAME phone line or eventually you will be warned and then card disabled.

Free Satellite is quite legal. Misusing Multiroom cards on pay Channels is theft of service or Fraud and criminal.

The way it works *may* be a little like this.

    1) The box is told when to "phone home" (a free call, you are never billed).
    2) If the boxes or one box never "calls in" it's flagged as problem
    3) Sometimes the boxes are told the SAME time to call. If this succeeds, then the boxes can't be on same line. It's flagged.

    They will eventually take action.

    .

they can and they do, but they won't disable the card.
Pretty soon the op's mates mate will be getting a mail saying that if they don't connect both boxes to the phone line given when the install happened, they'll be charged for two boxes.

The point is tho you can operate a Sky box perfectly well without it being connected to a phone line. Eventually they will charge you something like €37.50 for the second box, but if youre happy to pay it then they have no way of detecting that the second box is not in the same location as the first.

Youre quite right tho; it is theft of service and illegal.

they charge you twice the cost of your subscription. It happened to me - I disconnected both boxes from the phone line, and got billed for two subs, until I cancelled the multi-room. In fairness, they refunded the double-sub once I explained what had happened. but I still have the second box and can get BBC 1 and 2, and sky news

Of course if you are paying double subscription, full price on both boxes they don't care where the second one is.

Also they don't care about boxes in Spain as long as they get full price. As long as they don't know. No law is broken. If they DO know a Box is in Spain, then their contract with their content suppliers means they should disable the card. But STILL no law is broken.

AFAIK they only disable multiroom 2nd cards if you refuse to pay.

Double subscription? My mother has multiroom at home; at the time we had Sky Sports, ESPN and various other packages that came to something like €67, and we got a letter telling us that if we didnt connect the second box to a phone line (it was just in a room without a phone connection) that we would have to pay I think €37.50 a month for the second box. It was nothing like the price of the main package.

I can only tell you what they told me. I'll try to dig out the original letter. Main subscription was e90, they said I'd have to pay 180 (and charged me 180 one month, although the 90 was refunded) unless I connected the phone line.

I think you're right. Some I know was in the same boat. Double sub. But I suppose it depends on what humour they're in and what offers are up for grabs.

Fair enough; Im not doubting or disagreeing with yis! They might have made an error with us and werent taking Sky Sports into account or something. Makes a lot more sense to be charging double subs tbh; if it was only €37 a month for the second box regardless of what packages are on it its not much of a deterent unless you only have the basic €21 a month package!

€37 would be for some level of package above min, maybe 2 Mix + sport?

37.50 is for the basic and multiroom

Okay guys. First of all, this thread doesn't belong here, its about satellite. Second of all moving an active Sky viewing card out of the premises that it is for is against Sky's T&Cs. By all means move the box WITHOUT THE CARD (to use as a FTA receiver) once the subscription is expired, but while it is still in place you can't do that.

    Thread closed.
