There’s a debate going on over in legal discussion (here) about mandatory sentencing. It appears that the only people who are against some form of mandatory sentencing are those who work in the legal profession. What do members of AGS think, would you be in favour of mandatory sentencing?

I also posted the same poll in legal discussion and the results were 66% against.

Are you in favour of mandatory sentencing 12 votes

    Yes: I am in favour

No: I am not in favour

I said yes, If it's got to the stage where you've gotten a charge sheet, it means you've gone through the adult cautioning scheme to no avail or your offence is of a more serious nature.

I would be in favour of mandatory sentencing. imo, too many serial offenders are found guilty and bound to the peace, or given suspended sentances that rarely get activated.

I'd also have a 3 strikes and your out in relation to free legal aid. If you continue to be a scumbag, why should the state help you get off!

Not related to AGS at all, but I'd be in favour of it. In fact, it's something I've already emailed my local TD's (for all the good it did  )

I'll break the mold of the yes vote....I voted no.

Mandatory sentences are a joke. Everyone in the state contests a Murder charge......why?? Beacuse there is no reason for them not to. Same sentence at the end of the day!! This is a huge burden on the state and families.

Minimum sentences should be intorduced instead. IE - for a crime your minimum sentence is 10 years.....if you contes it and loose you get 15 years. If you plead you get 10. Simples.

I assumed he meant mandatory minimum sentencing. A mandatory sentence that doesn't budge is a bit silly.
