    Ok,

Can anyone tell me if this exception is still in the current GAA rule book for football. Guys I had the bet with .. didnt believe it was a rule, then said it must have been 30 years ago. I know it was in the rules 5 years or so ago.

    Rule 1.2
When the ball is on the ground , it may be played by any part od the body except the hands.it may be lifted off the ground with the feet

    exceptions:

(ii) Any Player who falls or is knocked to the ground while in possesion of the ball may fist or palm the ball away on the ground and may score by doing so.

Why would you not be able to fist the ball away if you are knocked over when in posession of it?

I'd be very surprised if this rule had changed.

This rule allows you to play the ball on the ground, not fisting it from your hands

    I think you've misunderstood.

If you fall in posession of the ball you can play the ball with the fist.

If you lose the ball the rule no longer applies.

From the current rule book, its still there
When the ball is on the ground, it may be played by any part of the body except the hand(s). It may be lifted off the ground with the feet.

    Exceptions
    (i) The goalkeeper may play the ball on the ground with his hand(s) inside his own small rectangle.
(ii) Any player who falls or is knocked to the ground while in possession of the ball may fist or palm the ball away on the ground, and may score by so doing.
(iii) The ball may not be lifted off the ground with the knees.

    Current playing rules

My interpretation of the rule is that if the guy has possession, ships a shoulder, falls and drops the ball, he can play the ball away while he is on the ground. But he actually has to drop the ball, because you can't handpass a goal. I'm pretty sure I've seen it in games, guy ships a heavy shoulder and ends up dropping the ball and goes to ground, but still flicks the ball away to a team mate. IIRC happened in one of the games at the weekend, could have been the Meath-Offaly game

Rebel girl is pretty spot on there. BUT, remember the 95 All-Ireland final? Sean McLoughlin played the ball away from himself on the ground to Peter Canavan who scored but the referee gave a free and Dublin won by a point:). At the time I believe this was not a foul as the player had been tackled and played the ball away from himself.

Did Colm O'Rourke score a similar goal in All-Ireland final? Have to buy a new rule book

Its available online! I've the link above :D

I had to check it to make sure - the ladies have the rule where the player can play it on the ground away from them but cannot bring the ball into their possession, which is the same so I had to double check!

Thats a fair rule and how I would call it at any game, male or female. Thanks for link
