    Hey guys,

So me and three buddies are heading to Boston on J1 next Wednesday, and we want to rent cars and do a bit of travelling around in August. Anyway, does anyone know if we will need to send away for international driver's licenses to be able to rent cars over there? I know if some states (Tennessee, California) all you need is your Irish license, but I've heard that in Illinois you need one.

    Thanks :)

I'd consider maybe trying to get a license while you're in Boston. Maybe rent a car for a week or two, drive around and read up on the rules of the road and do the test in it. Usually it can be pretty quick and your it will act as an ID too so you won't have to bring your passport out every where. Also, the car rental will in August will end up being cheaper too.

Are you sure? Many rental companies won't give you a car if you've only passed you test in the previous year.

I'm going to the states next week, and I'll be taking my International Drivers License just in case... I've never tried to rent in the states but up to now I've never needed it when travelling.

You should get one, AA issue them and it's cheap!

Ya, when i was going to the carribean some years ago, i got the AA one. Took them 5 mins to do. I would definately take it for safetys sake. Also, do you know if you are eligable to drive abroad? Think you have to have a full license for bout 2 years, but could be wrong.

Well I got my US drivers license in September last year and I have rented cars to go to Vegas. Unless different states have different laws, Enterprise here in California are fine to give me a car. It was a bit more expensive because I was under 25 but that was it.

AA Roadwatch only require you to have a full Irish license (see note 3).
