Yep, stick your spare wheel on and get the tyre replaced.

As the previous posters have said, get that wheel off and replace with the spare, then get a new tyre. It could be quite dangerous to drive on it.

Yeah your sidewall has been damaged and compremised meaning there is a higher chance of getting a blowout. Get the tyre replaced as soon as possible.

If you cannot get to a tyre centre promptly then at least switch it with the spare wheel until you can get it replaced.

It could blow out at any time and needs to be replaced. What is your spare like? I think if you kept the damaged tyre as your spare it would still fail the NCT down the line. Sorry about that...

The sidewalls on tyres are made up of vertical steel strips under the rubber which strengtens the sides. They are about an inch or two apart. An impact on the sidewall can damage or break these steel threads which means there is nothing apart from the rubber to reinforce in that part of the tyre. Some people repair them by putting a patch on the inside but this isn`t very safe. Best thing would be to replace the tyre.

The spare is not part of the NCT surely. (in that I have 2 cars without spares)

If present, yes. If not then no.

Did not know that. Never did an NCT before though... only UK MOTs.
