    Hi there,

Could someone point me in the direction of the rates of pay for readers for the LCA or JC? I'm only on maternity cover at the mo and I'm trying to figure out whether the rates would be enough for me not to go on the dole.

    Many thanks,

    T

    You should find it here:

Just to point out, from what I can remember, you get paid for the whole day, regardless of how long the exam or how many exams were on. When I did it, you also got paid for being 'available' the day before the exams start, so make sure to claim for that too.

    thanks for that! :)

I've done it a few times, it's about €100 per day and it's a daily rate whether the student does two exams or one or stays 20 mins or you spend 6 hours there.

Can you apply for this work while you are on maternity leave though?

Is that not for the person who is there as exam attendant (not sure of the proper title) who is there for the duration? If you're supervising exams, don't you only get paid per day of supervision?

Well, I claimed for it, mind you twas a few years ago! I think the idea is to give you time to meet the student or practice reading/scribing.

I have done reader for the last few years. I'm near sure we claimed for day before exams start. You have to go in to sort out room for candidate and organise tape recorder etc. Well thats what we done anyway and then got paid for the day.

I wonder can you claim retrospectively? :D

I'm not on maternity leave, just covering for someone who is!
What with the tax rate etc it doesn't really work out as being worth my while. I'd need at least four sessions a week when I factor in travel expenses etc. It looks like I'll be better off on the dole

Are you sure you'll be able to claim the dole? The maternity/non-casual rate includes holiday pay, which means you may not be entitled to it, depending on how long you've been employed. Check this out before you refuse any work!

You will be entitled to JSA. You will be out of work, available for work and have paid tax so of course you will be eligible for JSA

Well, I'm only going on what happened to a friend of mine. She found that she was only able to claim job seeker's allowance sometime in August, because the allowance is means tested and she had earned too much that year from the maternity leave she was covering.

Perhaps this has changed. I'm sure someone knows the ins and outs of it better than me, but it's worth checking out as no-one wants to be left unexpectedly incomeless over the summer.

    From experience:

If you were paid an hourly rate with holiday pay included you may not be entitled to JSA immediately. How long you would have to wait will depend on how much holiday pay you have been given - ie how many hours per week you have worked and for how long.

However, if you have been working decent hours for the full year you might be entitled to JSB - since you would be unemployed and would have paid tax.

fingers crossed I'll be able to claim JSA. I've only managed to cobble together 8 hours teaching a week so it won't be down to excessive earning if I'm not allowed!

You should be alright with 8 hours, my friend was on 22!

However, I really wouldn't turn down work even if it's not worth your while financially. It's good experience to mention on a cv and it shows the school that you're willing to work and may get your toe in the door.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Deemark.
Unfortunately the 8 hours a week has meant I have no savings and I can't live on less than 200 a week (rent being what it is) so I'm going to have to turn it down

hey,i am doing reader this year and came in and met the student on tuesday (day before the exams started) for 90mins done a bit of reading and general meet and greet and was told by the teacher over the exams that i would be paid for it..happy days!!
was trying to find out on google what the daily rate was but i was a bit confused but reckoned it was either €90 or €117 per day....no complaints, live a 30 second drive from the school(my old school) and its nice to see some of the teachers, handy number for any1 with time on their hands over the 2 weeks! i wasnt sure if you were paid by the hour or day, if its day even better because the student only has 1 single exam in the next 5 days im in!
another question...does any1 know what way you get paid for this. they got my bank details so into the bank but will it be mid july by the time the money goes into my account?????

We would hand in the claim form to the secretary in the school and she processes the payment and would have sent us out a cheque before the end of June. Not sure how it works in other schools but thats how we get paid.
