It's great to see an article on Giacchino. The man is a genius, and his music was such an integral part of the show. It underlined so many important scenes, be they intense, haunting, or downright emotional. One that stood out for me in particular this season was
when Jack & Co. were reunited with Sun, Lapidus and the others on the beach with (if I recall correctly) 'There's No Place Like Home' playing over the scene.
I remember reading that they really had to fight their case to have a live orchestra for the show. It actually wouldn't have been the same show without it.

Yeah, Abrams actually made the whole title sequence himself on his Powerbook before showing the pilot to ABC. It was meant to be a placeholder but they ended up keeping it. Many people complained about it over years for looking cheap.

Giacchino's live orchestra was definitely an essential component of the show. Even though Abrams left the show early on, the music (along with the casting) was one of the many ways he laid the groundwork for what made the show great.

Loved the piece of music when
Flocke and Jack were looking down the cave at Des and the camera just pulled away from them
