Motor tax advice

I've ordered a new car from Renault and my old car is being exchanged for scrappage.

The new car is due in early July - about 6 to 7 weeks.

My problem is the motor tax on my present car is due for renewal at the end of this month (May).

It will cost €173 euro for 3 months
My new car tax will be only €104 for the year!

    Do I...

Renew and spend all that money on a few weeks tax?
Not renew and take a chance I won't be stopped?

What do you think will be the consequences if I am stopped without motor tax even if I explain my new car is imminent?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Get the bus?

The old line "the new disc is in the post" normally buys at least a month, if you are stopped ;)

You'll be told to buy tax by the high horse riders on here but if it was me i'd take a chance but ultimately it is your call

If it expires End of May, you have until end of June to renew it. Will that give you enough time ?

If you don't drive about at weekends at night in town centres I'd chance it, however if you don't tax it in May and you're caught in July, you may be forced to back tax it for June and pay 3 months tax too.

It will if Renault get the finger out

To steve06 Your advice "Get the bus?" I hope was meant lightly on this beautiful afternoon and not the genuine advice of a 4,000+ poster. :D

Well whats the fine for having no tax?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,809 ✭✭✭✭smash

depends what the courts say. You'd probably get away with back taxing it though.

FCPN is €60 for non display of tax.

The summons for no tax (both can be issued) differs by district....my district you are looking at between €500 - €800

Having no tax displayed is generally dealt by way of fixed penalty notice. €80 fine usually. Remember though that traffic wardens as well as Gardai can issue them even if your car is just parked in a public place. you dont necessarily have to be stopped at a checkpoint or pulled in. if you pay for 3 months at the end of may then you getting value of just over a third of the price. Try and negotiate the dealer to pay 12 months tax on the new car as a bonus. it might cover most of what your losing out on.

EDIT: just seen above post. €60 it is.

tax the car.. Then when you get it scrapped, you can claim the road tax back from the motortax office.
    Thats what i did

You can only claim if you have a full 3 months left on the disc.

Is there penalty points in addition to the €60 fixed penalty?

Ok, so at the minute my tax is paid but the tax disc is at home, It was out last month (04/2010) so I have that old tax disc in the windscreen parked up here in Dublin.

So the most I can be fined is the €60 for non display? I cant be summoned for not having tax when the car is in fact taxed?

Why is it at home? Did it just arrive today or are you that lazy? :D

the offence is not displaying a valid vehicle licence (tax disc) in a public place. doesnt matter if its out of date or there's none at all. and having a valid tax disc is not much use if its not on your windscreen.

Complain to the dealer. My mother did and they offered her a loaner until her new Clio came in.

When she went to take up the offer her new Clio magically arrived a month early (or 3 months late depending how you look at it)

No. You can get a ticket for non display of a tax disc (even if you have it)

If you have tax.....then of course you can not be summons for no tax as you have taxted it pre detection. (However if you are stopped with no tax and you then back tax it you were still driving without tax and the motor tax office will certify this on a CT 53.....so you could be summoned)

Thanks, I was aware I could be fined for non display.

Car is taxed but its at home so I wont get the disc until Friday.

Its awkward the way when you buy a secondhand car you cant tax it over the net!

+1 on this. You won't have any trouble up to the end of June and you say the new car will be ready in early July. If you are stopped in early July and explain your circumstances it would take some b****x to summons you. The only problem you might have is parking in an area controlled by wardens where they are liable to slap on a FCP. I would chance it also. Worse case scenario you end up in court and the judge should be fairly sympathetic, i.e.throw it out
