Today I will have my last exam in college, this is my last year. Now that I'm finished can I claim job seekers allowance right away or do I have to wait until I graduate in September?

Wondering this also. I finished last week and while I dont want to go straight onto social welfare, I need to pay the bills and havent been able to find work yet. Would appreciate an answer to this. Have heard that you can sign on but cannot collect for 3 months ? Although this may only apply to school students.

You can sign on as soon as you have finished your last exam. Go to your academic administration and get a letter declaring that you have completed your course.

But do I have to wait 3 months for payments to start coming through ?

It depends on how efficient your local office is. Unfortunately you might be waiting a while, however get the aforementioned letter ASAP, get down to your L.O. ASAP and make your claim. Once you have made your claim, regardless of how long it takes to process, you are at the very least entitled to payment from that date though you should receive payment from the day after your last exam.

If you fail to make your claim promptly, the decision to backdate it to the end of your exams becomes discretionary for the officer deciding on your claim.

Furthermore, once you have made your claim for JA/JB, you are entitled to apply for supplementary welfare allowance at your local HSE health centre. This is like an emergency payment which will tide you over if it takes forever to process your JA/JB claim, its the same rate as Jobseekers, but is means tested.

    Good luck with it.

Cheers. I went in yesterday and they told me to come back in a month as they have a backlog! A month! Jesus.

They did take your claim, though, didn't they? If so, then any payment you're entitled to will be back-dated to at least today. if they (for some reason) didn't take your application, go back this avo, and make sure they do. They may be busy, but that's not your fault, and your claim can (normally) only be back-dated to the date of receipt of application.
