There is much comment here about people being unwilling to take responsibility etc. But a bit of leadership from the top would certainly help.

    from the UK cuts
Ministers will be banned from having a dedicated chauffeur-driven car. The only exceptions will be on security grounds. Laws said: "Ministers will be expected to walk or take public transport where possible, or use a pooled car. The pooling of cars will allow big savings to be made."

The ministers here would sooner cut the old age pension, and cut the ribbons out of health and education rather than do without their cars.

I wonder how Jackie Healy-Rae would take that?

I think it's a great idea to be honest and refreshing with it. I reackon they should follow it up now and make them clean their own moates.

I wonder how Jackie Healy-Rae would take that?.

Why single him out? Was he not the one who got a heart attack on a public train enroute to his dail obligations?

Erm, I believe a certain O'Donoghue may come to mind who HAS travelled to Kerry via government jet only to have his limo waiting to take him the SHORT distance home and his wife also celebrating a private function while using OUR limo.

Erm, I think you could think of more appropriate examples than JH-R ~ but I don't know him personally and you might.

Pooling of cars would be a super idea. Jackie Healy Rea and John O Donoghue could pool on the way from South Kerry :D:D
And "to tell the truth about it, there is no reason in the wide earthly world, why it wouldn't work, high up or low down"

The man is an odious money grabbing leech.

He;s entitled to a free travel pass but won't claim it as it would prevent him from claiming travel expenses.

OK, QED, I withdraw my objection. :)

Ther is no such thing as free travel, its actually cheaper to pay your own way as Irish Rail charge Goverment top rate for free travel pass..

When you're an OAP you won't be paying the govt's share though

In the context of JHR claiming travel for Goverment it cheaper on taxpayer for him to pay his rather than using travel pass, that is of course if he has one.

How will Bertie get to his book signings?

Will his garda goons have to travel with him.

There is greed right up there, from ministers to former ministers, back benchers, former TD's... They're all on the take. The only reason it's a legitimate take is because they made the rules to say so.

Name a TD that gives a rats arse about the taxpayer. What's to stop him getting up for free and claiming his unvouched expenses.

Having a travel pass would be too transparent, thats my opinion.

No chance. Are you seriously saying that the block payment to CIE for a free travel pass holder would be more per annum than someone travelling (presumably first class) REGULARLY up and down to Kerry?

Anyway, this stuff is detracting from the topic: there could be more more leadership and sacrifice from those at the top. It would make their jobs of cutting PS pay and positions a lot easier from a moral standpoint if nothing else!

I believe in the UK the new government is now making all ministers use public transport where available, and ministers no longer have their own car - they have a car from a pool. And they're taking pay cuts.

Here we try and do that and they scream and cry all the way to the courts.

What a joke of a country.

Indeed, Cameron has even gone so far as to state that they'll be footing the bill personally for some of the renovations they want done to Number 10.

I believe that it would require a change in the constitution to make this happen, or at least thats their usual excuse

    I wouldn't mind a full rewrite.

Who would rewrite it? the present Goverment or a joint grouping of all sides and interest groups?

Absolutely not! But as I've said already recently, "We can't do that..." is a great Irish expression.

Somebody will have to rewrite it, where will we find independant thinkers to take on the task, otherwise it would give years in the Supreme court being tested.
