Hi guys, I'm wondering could I open my Ableton songs in let's say Sonar and then work away in Sonar as if it was where they were first recorded. I presumed you would be able to do this but I tried looking through Google there and I can't find what I'm looking for. Cheers for any help on this

You can not do this with DAWS (more or less).

Some DAWs have the capacity to run other DAWs imside if them (ie Ableton open in a track in Sonar, like a virtual instrument) buts that's gonna be as close as you get with out exporting audio out of one, then importing it into the other.

Havent been able to do this with any of the ones that I have used.. Cubase/Reaper/LMMS ... If you could
    a) export the MIDI information to MIDI and then import to the second DAW, and
    b) find the source audio files (usually stored as MP3 or WAV) for any audio tracks,
you might be able to rebuild the song in your new DAW.

    Does Re-Wire not do this?

I know I can open a channel in Logic and play an instrument created in Reason using re-wire. Then when happy with it in Logic, bounce it to audio. You'd have to do it track by track though.

I think Re-Wire comes as part of Reason but can also be purchased seperately.

That's what I was revering to.

Not all machines ate particularly happy tryin to do it though.

Depends on your machine, the project and the two programs running.

You can Rewire Ableton into Pro Tools track for track. The problem is you can't use the plug-ins in Ableton when you're doing it. So we usually bounce the Ableton session down to its tracks all starting on a specific bar. Then just import the files into Pro Tools then.

    OMF export?

    OMF export?

I never had any luck with this . If you are going between Logic and PT then use BWAV they are timestamped, so as long as your start time is the same in both DAWS your laughing. You still need to consolidate a bit but it saves starting everything from bar 1 when all you have is a cymbal crash at bar 63:mad:

Export to .wav and mix that way. Old skool.

(really don't see a huge benefit in cross-compatability)
