I heard that it is possible stop paying the private vhi for one year and then assume your old package/policy.
Has anybody here heard of it or has experience with that? how do i go about?

As far as I know, regardless of your insurance history, if you let your insurance cover lapse for more than 13 weeks you are considered a new customer when you rejoin and have to serve all the waiting periods again and the criteria for preexisting conditions is dated from the date that you rejoined. But I could be wrong, your best bet would be to contact your insurance company and if it is possible to stop for a year and assume your old policy when you rejoin, make sure you get their confirmation of this in writing. Could you possibly move to a cheaper policy e.g. with hospital cover only?

To the best of my knowledge the only way you could resume cover after a year is by paying all the back premiums for that year - which kinda defeats the purpose of skipping for a year  .
