We upgraded very late in the game to a widescreen TV. At the moment, we've only got Analogue cable. If we got a digital box, would the digital channels natively drive the TV in 16:9 so you wouldn't get the squashing? Sky news must transmit a different channel for 16:9 because I've seen clips from it on youtube.

Some channels are 16:9 and some 4:3 on Digital. More are Widescreen on Satellite.

Set your TV menu properly to have black bands at side on current analogue.

Cinema Widescreen will still have black bands often, top & bottom. Get used to Black bands.

Most of the channels are 16.9 on digital, I would highly recommend getting one if not for the quality alone.
