    From RTE.ie
Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy has undergone emergency surgery after rupturing the blood supply to his liver in what medical staff describe as 'freak accident' while on international duty last night.

Duffy suffered the injury during a match between Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland development squad and the Ireland Under-23s.

The Everton centre-back collided with Under-23 goalkeeper Adrian Walsh and had on-pitch medical attention before being brought to hospital.

FAI medical staff say the 18 year old's life was saved as a result of the operation carried out by Gerry McEntee at the Mater Hospital.

After a period in intensive care he has since been moved to recovery.

The FAI are hopeful that the Everton centre-back will make a full recovery.

Jaysus that sounds serious enough lads, hope the young lad is ok!

That sounds nasty. Hope he is ok.

F**k thats sound bad. As we seen so tradigicaly recently with Leitrim GAA footballer Philip Mc Guniness terrible acidents can happen so easy in sport.

Just heard on 2fm they expect him to make a full recovery. Hope he recovers well.

Jaysus, could've been so much more than career threatening. Speedy recovery lad

nasty stuff, paper this morning described the collision but didn't have details of the op. Goalkeepers knee to the sternum apparently.

Jesus, how does a knee to the sternum do that, liver is well below there, I suppose that is what makes it a freak accident!

Glad he is going to be okay. Out of curiosity how many people thought back to a time when they were caught in the chest as a kid or badly in the groin etc and only came away with a rip in your top or a bit of mud on your shirt.

paper implied they thought last night that broken ribs did internal damage, but weren't sure what at time of press..

Aye, but the piece says that the blood supply to the liver was ruptured, there's probably an artery running from the heart to the liver that got ruptured.

Nasty anyway, hope he recovers enough to be able to play ball again.

Ya have to say well done to the medical staff on the field!

Yup, hepatic artery supplies oxygenated blood to liver. It's also connects to part of the stomach, pancreas and intestine. Thank you DIT for those biology classes!

Well done to the surgeons, pitch medics and the paramedics. Hope he recovers well and play again soon :)

Just read about this in the last few minutes, last I heard was that he had been taken to hospital on a precautionary measure, get home from work today and he's had life-saving surgery!

Tidy prospect for both Ireland and Everton, here's to a speedy recovery.

Indeed, it's oddly reminiscent of Seamus Coleman isn't it!? Guy nearly had his career ended by a blister on his foot

I have the photos on my website of the collision. It was pretty inocuous tbh. Keeper came out to punch the ball while Duffy was coming in to head the ball.

Makes you put all the stupid football bickering, massive transfers and sensationalism in football into perspective. Just reading about it in the Sunday Times there. Was 50/50 if he'd pull through at one stage.

Yeah, Trap was in tears talking about it. Scary stuff.

The more I read the worse it gets.
This is one of the worst footballing injuries I've ever heard of.
Apparently he lost 2/3rds of his blood and needed 20 pints of blood transfusions.

Him, Duffy, Shay Givens horror injury, Terry Dixon, is it just me or are we one of the most cursed countries when it comes to potentially/ already great players getting severe knocks? Trying hard to remember the last England talent in the making who had one!

Sounds like he's very very lucky. Came within seconds of dying aparently. Hope he makes a full recovery and back playing ball in no time.

Good to hear he looks like making a full recovery...thankfully it happened him with all the doctors and medical people around for the match who could give him immediate treatment.

Hate to think it might happen someone playing sunday league football

    Freak Accident indeed!

Get well soon lad... Great prospect for Everton and Ireland. Seen him play a few times for Everton and he looks like a tidy player!

Very worrying the more one reads about it. Delighted he seems to have come through the worst of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

Hope he pulls through and this doesn't effect him he has a bright future to look forward to.

Somehow missed this thread when it first came out, though it had just happened to him!

Good to see everything worked out though :o

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Haha, me too!

I was onto my Everton supporting mate, saying "HOLY F*** DID YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO SHANE DUFFY!?"

Can we change the thread title please?

I was absolutely gutted thinking Shane Duffy had to undergo major surgery a day after making his Prem debut.

    Thread title is inaccurate.
He hasn't started in Prem yet.
He came on with 30 minutes to go cos Everton only have 3 senior centre backs and 2 are injured.

Recalled from a loan at Scunthorpe.

Just wanted to say that he's played 2 weeks in a row now and hasn't done a bad job at all, filling in for Jags. He's going to be a massive player for Ireland.
