Restraining order?

Long story short.. I was kind of seeing this guy around Xmas, after a while some stuff happened and I told him I wanted nothing to do with him. He threatened to beat me and also said he used to drug my drinks. I went to the guards and he said there was nothing he could do, even though the guy is always in trouble with the law, he hadn't actually hit me and I had no proof he actually put something in my drink (een though I had all of the messages from him) Fair enough. Later that night I'm out with a friend and at the end of the night he comes up and punches my friend. We go to the guards they say there's not much they can do and he's due up in court again soon anyways.
2 months later some stuff happened and we ended up texting and getting along..just a message every 3 or 4 weeks saying hey. Then last weekend I'm out in the town he lives in (for the first time since he hit my friend) and he follows us and hits another one of my friends. He's claiming we were making a laugh of him (alcoholic who gets very paranoid w/ alcohol in him) even though we were 30 feet away and none of the people I was with even knew what was going on.
Can I get a restraining order against him? The guards aren't very helpful, one of them gave me his number and told me to call if he ever hits me personally but now I'm at the point where I'm afraid to talk to males or laugh if he's around incase he attacks them too.

The gardaí can investigate him for the assault on your friend if your friend makes a statement. If they tell you otherwise they are lying. If your friend wants to go ahead tell him to go make a complaint at the station. If they don't take his complaint speak to a sergeant and ask why.
