The greatest film ever was officially released 30 years ago today!

    "Apology accepted Captain Needa..." Epic.

I feel old! As for the greatest film, steady on. Its the best Star Wars film by some distance but thats all it is.

I suggest making your own to celebrate it's hilarious!

I love the scene where the Falcon evades the oncoming star destroyers by diving and spinning away, then gets chased by a TIE Squadron straight into an asteroid field...

I get chills when John Williams' fanfare kicks in, as one by one the TIEs are wiped out by hurtling asteroids, all while Solo deftly steers the Falcon around darting rocks and through narrow canyons.

    Also...

Surely there must be a new dvd cut released to mark this? C'mon George you're slacking.

Pity they didnt do a 30th anniversary cinema rerun for the SW movies like the 20th one. Heres hoping a 30th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark is out next year, sort it out Lucas!

Didn't they already do a run of Indiana Jones films this year?

I'm amazed that Georgieboy didnt take the opportunity to rip everyone yet again with a new Blu-Ray release with even more needless dodgy CGI additions.
    All time classic film though!

30 years! It's been 30 years since I ruined this film for my parents.

Happy birthday to one of the best films ever made imho.

I re-watched a few weeks ago and most of the special effects hold up even by today's standards and ironically much better than the prequels.

This film is pure genius :)

I saw the Original Trilogy in the cinema when they were re-released in 1997. As far as I know, there is a Blu-Ray released planned. Hopefully soon, with many extras!

I just posted about this in the Retro forum. This was the first movie i was ever brought to by my parents. Went to see it in the Ambassador cinema in Dublin and i just remember being awestruck by the sights and sounds. It still ranks as one of my favourite movies ever but it sure does make you feel old realising it's 30 years old.

As a kid this was one of the first movies I saw that had a sombre ending and I didn't like that...but hey as I grew up I and understood that not everything has a happy ending I got it and it has grown on me so much over time.

I have a hard ttime watching the dvd's what with the remastered inserts (if it ain't broke don't fix it) so I 'll dig out my old vhs copies from time to time. This film along with Aliens stand as my favourite sci-fi movies. This is just awesome...I mean every scene has something to it.

Some really great moments but I've found myself saying 'All too easy' (from the Vader duel with Luke) like a saddo to tasks (usually mundane things I've completed) but Vader's delivery is so badass!

Ah here! I'll put this up!

Even the little industrial sounds add to this scene!!

They released the original cuts on the OT on DVD in 2006. Ideally though, the Blu-Rays would feature every version of all the movies!

IMHO a perfect movie. Maybe I'm biased but I just don't see anyone making family/adventure movies to this standard nowadays, which is a pity. I guess the closest would be Pirates of the Caribbean or Harry Potter and that's not close at all.

I'm trying to see if just such a thing is possible at the moment. Will probably be the SE though as I don't think there are many original prints still floating about.

with the original movies, I'm not sure they would upscale to blu ray very well. Even the Special Editions have issues in the battle scenes. I think they should be left alone as they are.

I'd love another run in the cinema though, limited run with all six films over a period of a couple of months.

Sorry but Star Wars has more than one fan :D

Seriously though, fair enough you can have your opinion. But if you don't like the film why comment on it? or read a thread about it?

Star Wars did more than any other entity to change the way films were made, marketed, produced etc. They redefined cinema and influenced hundreds, if not thousands, of future productions.

I'm a big fan, but not a pure fanatic. I don't think it's sad that anyone would know this, as they are the purest definition of a modern cinema phenomenon.

Nope i hate star trek too, infact i hate any kind of sci fi. Id rather watch paint dry, peal and fall off...;)

Could I tempt you if I said there are places in Empire Strikes Back that you can see paint peeling?
