    Hi All,

I'm trying to decide the best way to spend cash and would really appreciate your opinion. Looking for something that plays movies and music. Options.

    1) Could get a new laptop and use it to play movies via HDMI on my HDTV and listen to music (Logitech speakers with optical input) also through the TV. Approx 400 to 650 Euro. Or a note book and option 2 or 3 (I need a laptop anyway)

    2) Could get a Western Digital HD Media player and an external hard drive (approx 250 Euro)

    3) Could get a PS3 and external hard drive (approx 300 Euro). I was told that on the PS3 large mkv's have to be split as it runs fat32? I tried to play a movie on a friends and it would not play?

What do you think? Any other options?

    Thanks for your help,
    Maic07.

    4) Get a PS3. Run PS3 Media Server on your laptop/PC. Point it at your media library. Job done.

Do you mean a netbook? A notebook is just the word most manufacturers use for laptop, a netbook is one of the smaller, cheaper, lower powered ones.

Sounds like you could do well with option 2 if money is tight. Western Digital's drives are very good and have a nice interface.

I use my PS3 for music and it's great for that but I don't know about movies on the HDD. You can stream them from a computer if you have good enough speed router or from an external HDD either.

Option 1 would only be good if you really want a good laptop as opposed to a netbook. I personally couldn't use a netbook for more than some short light computing but if that's all you need it for then it could be best for you. You will need an external HDD though if you go the netbook route.

How about a nettop ? might be a good compromise - however you would want to ensure that you get one with nvidia ion chipset - something like
