Garmin Edge 500 if you want something compact, Edge 705 if you want something bulky that can display maps.

Would they not get smashed to bits on a MTB?

Safe enough on the stem, or even on the top tube. Although Blorg trashed his one of the first times out on the MTB. It was a rough trail though.

And I had it on the bars which was a bad place. I flipped the bike and it landed on the bars and smashed the Garmin. Garmin have a good crash replacement policy; they sell you a new/refurbished 705 for £100.

Top tube would be a good place I think in terms of protection. I would consider using secondary retention like a zip tie over the whole unit- I've seen some pro bikes set up like this. I lost a Garmin once during a cyclocross race (found it after the race.)

If you've an iphone, before you splash out on a gps, you should try iMapmyRide app for the iphone.

I tried it today and it's pretty good..

I think you can get good contour information free- but have never used it myself.
