Great offer, but I hate when you can't think of one! ;[

Considering you need a Credit Card to sign up, I'd keep a close eye from hidden charges from this crowd. I know they say the domain is free for the year but they don't mention hosting. Also, they will automatically renew and charge for the domain name next year.

Just keep an eye on your CC bills over the coming months...

I noticed this too, stevire. So I chose the paypal option rather than give them my card details, just to be on the safe side.

I didn't like the look of it tbh, backed out at the credit card page.

no such thing as a free lunch and all that.

Yeah, for anyone interested, there is a refundable $6 charge...

Also, Irish company Blacknight currently have .com domains for €4.99, for a very limited time. No hidden charges, great customer support. Just sayin' :D

    per year
in the case of a domain name.

but that domain name doesn't come with hosting
    and is exclusive of VAT.

In my personal oppinion, namecheap is the best for paid domains.

They offer free whoisguard with every domain purchase (nobody can obtain your personal details via your domain), and an ssl certificate.

You can also save a few pennys by googling namecheap coupon, think it's first result.

"3 Months Free" offer valid with a 12 month minimum contract term only.

Not actually free, but good price for the package anyway.

Thanks op, I also got the pleasant surprise of the domain squatters being gone from the first domain I registered. :D

Don't worry about it, 1&1 are very reputable. The onus is on you to transfer the domain out at the end of the year though if you want it cheaper than 8/9 usd then, or cancel it if you don't want it anymore.
    Also, they accept paypal.

I've been reading online tat people aren't happy with this bunch, and that they're not helpful at all. I'd avoid...

Avoid it if you want, but you are missing out on a free domain. Some people are just so suspicous..

Well I've only heard one response to this, and its been negative
This seems to be a big scam. I set up a new domain with them, selecting Australia as my country and it let me order the free .com url.
I had to set up a recurring payment through paypal so they could take the $8.99 next year.
Three days later I emailed them asking what was going on and they replied saying that it can take up to 48 hours to set up (I'm almost sure 72 hours is longer than 48, but my maths isn't great..), the next day I emailed again and thay said there was a technical issue and I need to phone them, in the US!

Obviously I told them where to shove it. But this does mean the domain I wanted is now in nomansland and I can't get it from another seller as it is half registered to 1&1.
Hopefully it will get released at some point but who knows?

So, don't bother with this offer. It doesn't work.

I did tell them to phone me - their response was that their technical support office don't have the ability to make outbound calls!!

I just got confirmation from them that they cannot register the domain, although they still refuse to cancel my account they have offered me an alternative .com, - for $8.99 !!!

Cheeky buggers. Luckily I set up my account with paypal so I cancelled it that way.

I'll be avoiding this company like the plague in the future. icon_eek.gif

    @above

    Well, all I know is:

I used my real details. At the credit card details, I entered a 3V card with very little money on it.

4-6 hours later, I had my domain.

They didn't charge anything to my 3v at all, I could have used a 3v that had €0.00 on it and I would have gotten the domain. That's all I did.

They didn't charge anything initially but the point of the matter is that they will charge something to your card. There is that $6 returnable fee.

3v is a smart move, but I generally don't like the look and feel of the website. For a website hosting company it just doesn't seem authentic enough for me to go ahead and share my CC details.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning OP. I'm questioning the company at hand. Let the buyer beware and all that lark. I just hate to say "I told you so!!" :D

    Paypal Instructions:

1 Click the My Account tab.

2 Click Profile at the top of the page.

3 Click the Pay List link in the Financial Information column.

4 If you wish to cancel a recurring payment, simply click on the relevant order and click the Cancel link. You will be prompted to confirm your actions, check the details and click on the Yes button.

Remove the 1&1 entry, and they will be unable to charge you in the future :)
