    And the facebook page.. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Everybody-Draw-Mohammed-Day/121369914543425
ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN -- An Internet clampdown in Pakistan widened Thursday as the government blocked access to the YouTube Web site, citing its "growing sacrilegious content."

The move came one day after the civilian government ordered Internet service providers to restrict access to the Facebook social networking site, which drew fire in Pakistan over a page encouraging people to post caricatures Thursday of the Prophet Muhammad. That order followed an injunction by a Pakistani court, which agreed Wednesday with a petition by an Islamic lawyers' group that the page violated Islamic laws banning the prophet's image.

Classic.. Facebook group having such a massive impact :D Like 9,000 pics already.

Personally I think this is disgusting. As far as I can see this draw mohammad thing is simply to insult and offend those who are Muslim. Remember this is not just offending extremists, its offensive to your average Moslem too. Standing up for free speech? What a joke.

    Moslem?

Offensive hardly, these lads need to get out more, but i think its more mocking the fact that these lads will go mental and act so violently over something so small and to try and put fear into people.

No it's not good enough, the danish cartoon controversy was baked by a bunch of loons who dragged up old photos to stoke up anti western sentiment while having no problem living in a western country. How petty must your beliefs be if god who created every galaxy, black hole, super nova and ever life form gets upset over a cartoon.
I'm not in favour of mocking peoples beliefs for the sake of it but no ones imaginary friend takes precedent over freedom of speech.

Well look at it this way: A huge group of people find this: upsetting, hurtful and disrespectful.

Now these people are deliberatly setting out to disrespect and upset these people. Just because its a drawing doesnt make it ok. If someone deliberately sets out to upset, hurt and disrespect someone that makes them a right dick In my opinion.
Remember that we also, sad, but true: hurt the feelings of the moderate muslims aswell.
Now thats hardly fair is it?

A group of lads (and probably lassies) years ago drew something up too.
They knew when doing it, it would upset a lot of people (it did BIG time) but they still did anyway - and you know what, I'm glad they did!

I think what they drew up was called the 1916 proclamation - I could be wrong.

Thanks heavens speech/opinions is still hard to stifle in all its forms.

I have some bit of respect for the people who were offended by the Jyllands-Posten cartoon and wrote a strongly worded letter to the newspaper.

I have no respect for the people who were offended by the Jyllands-Posten cartoon and then went onto plot to murder of the man.

I have no respect for the people who were offended by the Jyllands-Posten cartoon and stormed various European embassys assaulting staff and trying to burn down buildings.

It will be a sad day when the world will have to tiptoe around these loonies.

Well, I guess free speech means the right to act like an insulting, attention-seeking tool. That doesn't change the fact that the people who are falling over themselves to offend religious people are insulting, attention-seeking tools.

There is some dopes on Facebook that are tools for just insulting!
Some more tools in Pakistani want to plant some same dopes.
...And those dopes are using tools to make themselves tools!

I think it's more standing up for your rights, rather than trying to be an insulting attention seeking tool. If nobody defends or practices their rights, they'll soon be taken away. Anyone happy with that scenario, is a tool in my book.

this isn't on in my opinion.

Obviously, if you know my thoughts on Islam them you'll know I really don't care who draws Muhammed.

I also don't think people should be stopped from doing so..simply out of worry of offending.

But to set out on a path to offend? For no other reason but to offend? Seriously, would 99% of these images have ever been drawn if this 'event' had not been organised?
Terrible stupid carry on to be honest, there's free speech and all but this is just abusing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

I have the right to draw a picture of Muhammad that would be insulting to Muslims.

I could walk around with a swastika tattooed on my head, wear an upside down cross or protest against the war in Iraq during a soldiers funeral.

However, I choose not to because I'm not an insensitive prick.

Just because we have the right to do something, doesn't mean we should.

And besides, this Facebook campaign is nothing more than ignorant hatred of an entire religion and those who practice it. I don't see them protesting about other countries/groups/religions that are potentially viewed as against free speech.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭ashyle

Was gonna join in with the Draw Mohammad thing, because I do believe in freedom of expression etc. and that episode of South Park was quite a clever satire.
But looking at the event on facebook, there were so many offensive things written on the 'event wall', by the people taking part. Made me feel uneasy, some very hypocritical things on it. They didn't 'get' the point in the same way as I see it.

Well, there are plenty of contributions in a thread on the Atheism & Agnosticism forum: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055908791 . I did one, but it's not really a picture... or is it?

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

So what's your thoughts on youtube and the likes being banned by their governments?

Well, like most of us rational folk, I don't agree with that either. The gov shouldn't go around banning things because that limits other people's freedom. I don't agree with censorship, we should all be allowed the chance to make up our own minds regarding what's offensive. It's a personal decision.

If anyone anywhere is offended by a facebook group drawing pictures, I want to hear their logic.
The Qur'an does not explicitly forbid images of Muhammad, but there are a few hadith (supplemental traditions) which have explicitly prohibited Muslims from creating the visual depictions of figures under any circumstances. Most contemporary Sunni Muslims believe that visual depictions of the prophets generally should be prohibited, and they are particularly averse to visual representations of Muhammad.[3] The key concern is that the use of images can encourage idolatry, where the image becomes more important than what it represents. In Islamic art, some visual depictions only show Muhammad with his face veiled, or symbolically represent him as a flame; other images, notably from Persia of the Ilkhanate, and those made under the Ottomans, show him fully.[1]
Other Muslims have taken a more relaxed view. Most Shi'a scholars accept respectful depictions and use illustrations of Muhammad in books and architectural decoration, as have Sunnis at various points in the past.[4][5]

However, many Muslims who take a stricter view of the supplemental traditions, will sometimes challenge any depiction of Muhammad, including those created and published by non-Muslims.

Seems noble within the confines of the madness of religion, noble enough to kill for

@sponsoredwalk - yeah totally, it makes sense if you really really like something and somebody draws a picture slagging it off, you would get annoyed. But to kill for it, thats's a wee bit extreme.

eg. If someone drew a picture making fun of Rose from the Golden Girls I would be super pissed. But I wouldn't kill anyone for it. I hope.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,510 ✭✭✭Hazys

I think the most worrying thing here is that South Park insults everybody and every religion, some poeple get offend (Iaasc Hayes left the show) some people let it go.

But as soon as the Muslim religion gets insulted on South Park, death threats are given to the creators and Comedy Central blocks out the picture of Mohammed in a bear suit. Its disgraceful.

If the people dont stand up for freedom of speech who will? Company's and Governments are just going to tiptoe around the issue. This is why Everybody Draw Mohammed Day was started, unforunately racists are going to pigback this but what can you do. We should give into people who threaten people with violence, if you are offended, dont throw your toys out of the pram...
