If you get found out, then after the month of working you won't get any jb.

Could you ask the job for a small advance in your first week?

Go ahead and risk it, it's only for a month and if you sign off now you will have a lot of hassle signing back on, it's not worth all the messing for one month's work.

Could you get a bank/credit union loan/overdraft? Maybe borrow from family member?

The legal answer is to approach your CWO, who may be able to arrange some sort of advance for you.

I think the smart option is to turn down the job.

After the job is finished won't you have to wait 6 weeks before you can claim again?

No: there will be a three day stand-down. It may take six weeks to start the money flowing, but the claim will start from day three.

Or ... if you tell them it's a temporary job up-front, they may just put you on dockets. (Even better if you can say it's casual, but will be full time for a couple of weeks).

    OP have a read of http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/SupplementaryWelfareAllowance/Pages/default.aspx ----> http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/SupplementaryWelfareAllowance/Pages/ExceptionalNeedsPayments.aspx

I came across this when reading up about being un-employed (was never informed about this, and I have had a couple of meetings with Officer person.)

But anyways, I always keep that option to the back of my mind in case Social Welfare pay gets delayed or being out of money or anything like that. It might or might not be worth the time explaining an individual's situation to Welfare person, where the Emergency fund would be re-paid back promptly to Social Welfare, when the Company pays , (God it's hard to phrase without being suggestive here  )

There's so much bloody red tape with seeking and getting and actually doing the job it's crazy!!! You have a great opportunity of a month's work now and ya might end up with nothing, ironically enough; - all _because you're working!!:) What's the country coming to??!! Everything is so binding here.

Why don't you go to the dole and go casual for the month. All you need is a letter from the employer to say that its just a months contract. You won't get any dole for the month but at least you'll get paid straight away when your job finishes.

I used to work as a CO in a social welfare office in Dublin and what I would probably do is dependent on your next sign on date. I would go into your sw office and tell them that you are going on holidays during the next sign on date - that gives you two months unhindered. Generally it takes them quite a while to receive notice from revenue of any employment. Now i wouldn't condone defrauding the state but if you were caught they would be lenient if you explain your case. Its also worth noting that if you are required to pay back any sw payments they only take 10-15 euro a week. A lot of people who tried it when I was working there looked at it as an interest free loan with excellent payment terms.

    I wouldn't condone this behaviour though :)

And people wonder why we have so much social welfare fraud.

Having such a softly softly approach just encourages people. Any attempts to defraud social welfare should be treated harshly.

Atleast the casual option is at least somewhat accurate and factfully describes the situation. A one month contract is a temporary position, not a holiday FFS

The casual work option is not an option - you cannot go on the casual work scheme if you work a 5 day week. In these situations your file has to be closed while you are working - irrespective of the contract term. You are in breach of the SW regulations if you refuse the position and stand to lose your allowance. Once you are back at work you can experience long delays in getting your file back up and running. Time I know from experience people cannot afford - although the HSE are very good in those instances in providing emergency provision to people waiting for the allowance.

The provision of SW is a difficult job, you encounter poverty on a daily basis. You see hundreds of genuine cases but you also see huge amounts of people who fraud the system daily. These people have no intention on returning to work and until the system is changed this will continue. When a person is making a genuine effort to get back into the work place the system should facilitate this. This is not possible in our current set-up and it is imperative that the staff are conscientious and perceptive to this need. All the op needs to do afterwards is hold his/her hands up and say that he had claimed while working in error and give it back. In this way a) he has the money to pursue the job b) his allowance doesn't get messed around c) he has done the ethical thing by not defrauding the state.

You never know where a 6 week contract will go - I took on a job as a temp in a company for 2 weeks and they subsequently created a position for me with a years's contract. Sometimes you strike it lucky :o

OP, go to your community welfare officer (different from the social welfare office plead your case, they should give you money to cover you for the month and then you have to pay them back when you get paid from your job
