Well, there were probably no plans to build any religious worshipping doo dahs there at all, so it looks like they are trying to basically shit stir in the name of 'tolerance'.

As the world leader in capitalism, demand is a key driver, where is the demand for such a building at this location?

    At least say why?

Would it have been ok to stop the building of churches after the crusades?

Personally I really don't see why people view this to be in bad taste. Not all Muslims are terrorists, the people who committed the attacks just happened to be Muslim. The only bit I don't like is it how they see building a Mosque as being part of a good PR campaign for Islam but I suppose that's what all religious buildings are anyway.

It's really pissing poeple off though.

What's annoying the hell out of me, and I think is a sad reflection of the state of the US, is that nearly a decade later, ground zero is still a hole in the ground, and they're still not entirely certain what should go there.

Can you imagine that being the case in Beijing? The rebuilt/replacement tower would have been open the last four years.

As far as I know, the Ground Zero Monument is already under construction on the site.

Odd fact ; The open space in the center of The Pentagonis was informally known as ground zero, and a snack bar located at the center of this plaza was nicknamed the "Ground Zero Cafe".

And why did the attacks happen?

Did they just have too much free time and decide to attack America for no reason?

Should we treat all Muslims differently now based on the actions of a few?

    From Wiki...
    Planned mosque construction

On May 6, 2010, neighborhood authorities approved plans for a $100-million mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site.[46] The project was unanimously endorsed by the 12-member Community Board 1's financial district committee. Committee Chairman Ro Sheffe said "it will be a wonderful asset to the community." While nobody at the board meeting protested the mosque plans, some 9/11 families found the proposal offensive because the September 11 hijackers were Muslim.[47]

The project, a collaboration between the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative, is intended to foster better relations between Islam and the West.[47][48] In an interview, Daisy Kahn, executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement, stated, "we decided we wanted to look at the legacy of 9/11 and do something positive. She added that her group represents moderate Muslims who want "to reverse to trend of extremism and the kind of ideology that the extremists are spreading."[49]

It has been reported that the opening date of the mosque may be set as September 11, 2011; the 10-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks.[50]

American Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is the chief exponent of the mosque project.

I presume they happened because someone obviously wasn't very happy with the united states for some reason or other.

We should not treat Muslims differently based on the actions of a few people.

We don't 100% know for sure who was behind the attacks in the first place either. The conspiracy theories forum has a few theories on who actually caused it.

I don't think it would be smart to build this mosque on the site of ground zero because i imagine many Americans would be very sensitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,815 ✭✭✭✭galwayrush

My reason is, in America, a lot of people are strongly against Obama's health reform because despite the good it may do,they saw it was leaning towards Communism, so despite most people in America probably ( hopefully) realising that not all Muslims are bad , they would see this as leaning towards rewarding their terrorist enemies and see it as an insult to all those who died in the attacks.

Your assessment of the situation was incredibly stupid. With the amount of flack innocent Muslims are getting anyway, do you honestly think they just sit around coming up with ways to wind people up?

Were talking about innocent Muslims here not terrorists.

Then why propose it so, what do they have to gain? Why not build it 10 blocks from groud zero, whats the difference 2 vs 10. They are not that naive to believe that nobody would have a problem with it (whether rightly or wrongly), and somethings are best left unavoided.

Its all sh1t stirring, like this thread, misquoting an article to say the mosque will actually be built on ground zero, which is false just to get a raise out of people.

No, I can see why they want to simmer relations with the West and promote Islam as a religion of peace, but I think this is very much a wrong way to go about it. Obviously not all Muslims are terrorists. In fact, most educated people know that, oddly enough...

...but building a religious centre in a business district, more importantly an Islamic one at Ground Zero, is, to me, either shit stirring or incredibly naiive. I think there would be more lost than gained from it, tbh.

Ah, but you see, I think you're missing the point - there's plans for some new towers to go up just 2 blocks away from the mosque. Now those terrorists are complete nutters, but they are also very religious & the chances of them bringing down the new towers & damaging the Mosque are zero to none. ;)

Maybe the US should build mini-mosques everywhere, have one on liberty island, one in times square, one next to the white house, heck put them on tanks too...

    From the fb site:

"So Nation of Islam, Muslims, this is America, we understand that you hate us and want to kill us. Your Quran says it all too vividly. We don't want your Mosque, we don't want you to have a symbol of dominance over... us! We will not stand for it and we will not allow this to happen!
We DO NOT want your Sharia Law! "

Not all Mosques are bomb proof from Islamic terrorists. Sunni & Shi-ite mosques have been bombed in Iraq.

Firstly it is not on Ground Zero it is two blocks away

second, there are religeous structures nearby representing other religeons.

thirdly, they own the site and under the law are allowed to build what they like on it.

fourthly the building that is there is run down

fifthly at least 300 of those killed on September 11 were muslim.

This is just the American Right getting their knickers in a knot again.

It does seem a bit provocative but the Americans have set a bit of a precedent for this type of thing, by carving the presidents on Mt. Rushmore.
I'd be interested to know the percentage of New Yorkers that actually oppose it.

There has been a lot of legal wranglings over claims of the land/funding for the towers but theyre on their way now. the freedom tower is over 20 floors at this stage

    tower 4 is above ground

tower 2 and 3 are at foundation stage, the memorial is substantially complete.

They're motivation for the attacks was not based on their humanity, it was based on the fact that they were Muslims.

You can (and should) say that most Muslims disagree with their actions, but you cannot divorce their religious beliefs from their actions - they were the primary reason for the attacks.
