No, you can take any number of modules you like. In fact many students end up with an extra one or two especially if there are electives that will give added value to the award i.e. Childcare students often take Understanding Special Needs and Special Needs Assisting as additional elective modules if they are interested in working in this area.

I am probably giving you more information than you need, however, it might be worth checking out the FETAC website @ www.fetac.ie for further information regarding the modules available on the programme of study that you are interested in.

Furthermore, if you already hold a full award @ FETAC Level 5 you can gain an additional award in a second subject area by adding the mandatories needed for that course. (Combined total should equal 12 modules including mandatories).

For example, someone with a Major Award in Childcare can also gain a Major Award in Healthcare by adding the 3 Mandatories: Care Support; Care Skills; Safety and Health @ Work, plus one other general studies module from the list of allowed modules i.e. Care of the Older Person or Intellectual Disability Studies.

    I hope that helps!!

    Cheers

thanks so much for that, so if i were to do extra modules,
does that mean that the maxium points which can be obtained would be higher then the usual 400 or would it be the same?

    thanks again

    You are welcome!

In relation to the above query, the maximum number of points you can receive in respect of a FETAC Major Award @ Level 5 is 400. Check out the CAO website for more information in relation to the course you are interested in - http://www2.cao.ie/fetac/FETAC_scoring.pdf

The information relating to achieving two major awards with a number of the same modules is not accurate.

You are not awarded the two Major awards you are awarded one and there is a subsequent statement that you have achived the necessary should you complete mandatories of a second statement.

This mis information has been doing the rounds and is very upsetting for students when they are informed by FETAC of the difference.

In reply to your post...I still stand by my original answer...the information given in it is supported by Qualifax - the National Learners Database - which comes under the auspices of the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI) in their FETAC FAQ section - http://www.qualifax.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=234%3Afetac-faq&catid=70&Itemid=238

"Q8: Do you have to complete a full 8 modules again to achieve a second level 5 FETAC Certificate?
A: No, a maximum of four module credits (to include communications, a work experience module, and two other modules) may be carried forward to another certificate, where a candidate has already met the requirements for one certificate.

To qualify for the second certificate, a candidate must reach the required standards in four additional vocational modules from the list for that certificate."

However, I would advise anybody interested in working towards a 2nd Award to check with their programme provider for the correct advice with regard to the Award they wish to gain. If you are still unsure - check directly with FETAC www.fetac.ie

    Cheers

V you qualify for the standard you do not get issued a second certificate, this is where students get very upset and confused. As you suggested contact FETAC for further information.

    Further Clarification:

You are right on one point, students cannot submit for 2 certificates in a single FETAC Assessment period, however, they can submit for a 2nd certificate (AWARD) during any subsequent period - once they have met the module requirements @ FETAC Level 5 including all of the mandatories needed for both awards.

Back to my original reply- for example - a student completing a full Award in Childcare, can add the additonal modules needed e.g. for Healthcare (with the same or another provider) and sumbit for the 2nd Award once they have completed all the work necessary i.e. May 2010 - submit for Childcare; May 2011 - submit for Healthcare!!

Further information on FETAC can be found at: http://www.fetac.ie/fetac/learners/learners.htm
