I'm don't really know any better way, but that should do the job just fine. If you can rip it to your hard drive, you can use Windows DVD maker or similar software to burn it to a DVD. How many hours of video would you be looking to transfer?

With regard to the tapes' age, there will probably be a pretty noticeable loss of quality when you look at it on the TV, but there's nothing you can do about that now. In fact, the best thing to do is transfer it ASAP before the quality degrades further on the VHS tape.
