Shane Ross Castigates Arrogant CIE Board

Press Release By Shane just now. How can a state owned company refuse to appear in front of an Oireachtas Joint Committee who are in effect the shareholders. I see Dempsey did not make them do so either.

"CIE BOARD REFUSES TO MEET OIREACHTAS COMMITTEE

The refusal by the boards of CIE and Iarnrod Eireann to appear before the Joint Oireachtas committee on Transport has provoked the committee into seeking powers to compel the directors attendance. CIE chairman John Lynch seems set on a collision course with the Committee.

Senator Shane Ross proposed a resolution at the committee today, seconded by deputy Fergus O’Dowd seeking compulsory powers to bring in the non-executive directors before it to answer questions. The resolution was passed unanimously.

Senator Ross said today: “The refusal of the non- executive board to appear will frustrate the enquiry into the corporate governance and other more serious issues at CIE and Iarnrod Eireann. The executive chairman John Lynch’s letter to the committee has given absolutely no reason for this refusal. It can only be interpreted as reluctance by a politically appointed board to answer challenging questions to be put to them on behalf of the taxpayer”

It emerged recently that the board of CIE was never given copies of a €500,000 report by consultants Baker Tilly into procurement and the abuses of Procurement at CIE. Its findings were deeply embarrassing to the semi-state body.

    -ENDS"

They must be abolished and quickly. Simple as that. Face down every last one of them, from employees, unions to management.

For those who aren't bothered watching the video, what was the gist of Barry's lashing?

He basically said that Ross rarely attends the Transport Committee meetings and being a journalist he is coming at this issue more so with a certain agenda than anything; he also said that those who attended gave whatever information they had to. The lunchtime thing was Ross being pompous and arrogant while Barry was arguing the toss with him; in short nothing to worry about.

His last letter-writing campaign seems to have silenced the Tribune quite effectively.

Erm... Barry seems a tad paranoid these days. Not only is Ken Griffin out to get him but so is Shane Ross!

I would. From what I hear, the journalist no longer works for the Tribune.

Indeed he no longer is employed by the Sunday Tribune but what are you suggesting?

I merely suspect that he was the driving force behind that paper's CIE coverage and that there'll be far less of it in the future.

Just to put an end to this silly speculation: I no longer work for the Tribune but that has nothing to do with Iarnrod Eireann. I've simply switched papers and will no doubt be returning to IE in due course.
