I'd give a guess that your crank sensor could be at fault.

were would that be located?? how will i know if its gone??

I'm fairly sure its at the back of the engine at the right hand side.
Maybe a check of a Haynes manual would help.
Some times they can be cleaned and i'll work again.

Hope the pic's help. If no joy a diagnostic check might be your next step.

Those Almera's can be read without diagnostic equipment to get basic fault codes. What you do is short two pins on the diagnostic socket and then count the blinks from the engine management light on the dash. The blinks correspond with a fault code. I can PM you the exact procedure if you want to try it.

Beforehand, when you had the car running and it died, was the engine management light on when it was running? And was the rev counter jumping about in an unusual way when it was running? Have you checked for a spark when you are cranking the engine?
