Laptop Life Expectancies

I think a thread gathering the following info could be useful, especially for anyone buying second hand...
    • Laptop: dell xps m1530
    • age: 2 years
    • Still usable: Yes (after service)
    • Problems experienced: Power brick needed replacing twice. Showed messages about battery life ending after 13 months. Laptop died after 18 months - needed replacement motherboard. Left trackpad button is worn out after 2 years. Can occasionally overheat if running high end graphics. It sometimes registers the mouse being dragged incorrectly when the trackpad is in use. Gives a constant mild electric shock to the touch while a usb device is connected with an external power source.
    • Manufacturer response: All issues experienced within [extended] warranty. Next day on site service warranty honoured in each case, including replacing the battery, and excluding the trackpad button (haven't contacted them yet). Never bothered contacting them about the mouse drag thing (probably a design flaw anyway).

    • Laptop: dell inspiron 1501
    • age: 3.5 years
    • Still usable: Yes
    • Problems experienced: Power brick needed replacing once. Graphics card was not actually vista compatible at all at launch [free vista upgrade programme]. Battery life only a minute or so now (expectedly). dvd drive not functional since about 18 months-2 years old. Hinge a bit wobbly. Severe problem with overheating gradually worsening since about 2 years old - corrected this myself by removing dust clogging vents inside (this accumulates due to a design flaw). Keyboard a bit unresponsive now imo - you have to hit the leys hard or something.
    • Manufacturer response: All issues outside warranty except the vista upgrade causing massive issues with gpu drivers etc. No help from Dell; eventually found out what was up myself.

    Add your info!
