Pfizer is to cut 275 jobs in Newbridge, Co Kildare, with a further 510 jobs to go if buyers are not found for plants in Dublin and Cork.
The IDA is to begin searching for organisations to take over facilities at three Pfizer plants. If a buyer is not found, 210 jobs will be lost at Dún Laoghaire, 225 at Loughbeg and 75 at Shanbally.
The company, Ireland's biggest multinational employer, currently employs 5,000 people across 13 sites involved in manufacturing, research and development in Ireland.
Pfizer made the announcement this afternoon as part of a restructuring of its operation. The pharmaceutical giant said its merger last year with Wyeth means a number of positions have been duplicated.

The company said it was committed to making a 'concerted effort' to sell the sites it proposes to close as ongoing operations.
'We have been successful in this regard before having recently sold our animal health plant in Sligo and our Loughbeg API plant, preserving jobs at both locations,' said Paul Duffy, the company's vice president of manufacturing for primary care and oncology.
Pfizer global manufacturing president Nat Ricciardi said restructuring the plant network worldwide was critical to remain competitive in the environment.

'We are keenly aware of the impact these types of changes have on employees and their families,' Mr Ricciardi said.

'We will provide support to our colleagues who lose their jobs so that their transition to new careers is as smooth as possible.'

Do you reckon if they went on Dragons Den they would find a buyer???

In all seriousness why is the lisbon treaty doing this to us?

The preceding comments are JOKES for all you humour nazis.

what's this got to do with Lisbon? two multinationals merged and they have duplication of jobs (As it says in the article)

They are a commercial organisation, there to make a profit, they are not a charity.

This is bad news, especially for those involved (There may also be knock on job losses as well) but in this case Lisbon, the EU, the Pope and even the government can't be blamed.

I save my sense of humour for things that are actually funny.

Sad news, and not so long after Quinn either. My thoughts are with everyone involved and best of luck to them in the future.

My advice to the employees would be to keep their peckers up.

Will probably get a few packets with the redundancy.

It was a matter of time, especially with Lipitor and Viagra going off patent soon and the Wyeth merger.

Heart goes out to everyone who will lose their job in the coming months/years at Pfizer. It'll be tough to find another job in the sector.

All the plants that they're exiting from will be sold as going concerns. The only definite redundancies at the moment are in newbridge.

True, I guess the site in Newbridge was shaky for a while but I heard that they were investing in it? I hope they find a buyer, I guess the likes of Hovione did buy a plant before and hopefully they'll manage to sell their other sites that are due to close.

Am I the only one who sees a coincidence here?

Pharmaceutical Company begins letting staff go only ONE week after a new law is introduced banning legal highs?

    :pac:

You made a joke that wasn't funny, get over it.

The fact is Pfizer cutting jobs has sweet **** all to do with the government. They purchased a smaller rival and they are now consolidating worldwide.
I'm no fan of the government but when you're trying to take a stab at them at least reference something that they are actually responsible for (lord knows there is a lot of them).

I thought Fianna Fail and all the other pro lisbon parties promised that. But the EU never said anything like it. Of course then Brian Lenihan said that they never promised jobs either, so in reality we were lied to.
