Was watching TV3 a while ago. The Truth About Travellers. Pretty interesting program. But then an ad came on for a program they're showing examining the decreasing use in this country of the Irish language. And this serious examination of our native tongue, what did they name it?

    Cupla focal, focal use?

I want to meet the person who came up with that title and shake his hand!

Why is using a play on words disrespectful to our native language? Surely by using the language in the first place, shows it some respect & secondly - how the hell do you insult a language?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭plein de force

    you're right it isn't
it's impossible for it to dumb down even more
they really have shows for the braindead, such drivel and ****e

Tv3 is awash with celebrity trash and/or ripoff T.V programs from the yanks or Brits. Fact is it will never go away due to the brainless morons which account for most of the Irish population.

I don't think they're being disrespectful. Someone in TV3 just really loves puns. And crap television.

I didn't see it but apparently they questioned guys about how they could afford certain things/where their money came from and the shifty answers spoke for themselves.

I like him on Newstalk too. Wasn't over impressed with the TV programme, but that was due more to the poor production & bad editing by TV3. I have to say though, he looks completely different from what I expected - his voice makes him sound like a toff, but in reality, he looks more like a taxi driver.

the problem is the way in which irish is taught in schools and not the language itself we need more focus on actually speaking it like is done with the other languages rather than rhyming off grammar....i for one dont think it should be an opt out subject

Yeah I couldn't wait to see what he looked like, missed the first week and there were a load of women texting newstalk saying how sexy he was.
I had kinda pictured him as that dude who has that cokking at river cottage something or other show on channel 4 but as you said, taxi driver...

    Nah, tuisil ginideach. Gaeilge zing.

No....it should be "cúpla focail"...the "i" shows that it's plural. Tuisil Ginideach is genetive case, and there's no genetive case in that sentence.

nah, it is cúpla focal. cúpla may indicate more than one, but you always take it as singular. as in, there is A couple. mar an gcéanna as gaeilge.

Surprisingly, they were correct there. 'Cúpla' is an exception and doesn't change 'focal'. I can't find the grammar rule/justification online but I'm 100% certain it's correct.

They spent a bit of time debating the truth about travelers program on Vincent Brown. Did anyone notice Browns curl over? It stood out like a sows ear last night.

The traveler talking about tarmac, the most of us only lay it this thick (keeping his fingers about an 1.5" apart) but we lay it this this thick (keeping his fingers 4" apart)

Is TV3 the channel that has that show "expose"? That show really makes my jaw drop with the sheer vapidness of it & the unironic celebration of consumerism and celeb worship. I'd be concerned about the mental capacity of anyone who could watch it for for more than about 45 seconds without wanting to throw themself out the nearest window.

I like TV3 and their documentaries.

Not sure why the station gets such a hard time, RTE's far from perfect itself and you can't please everyone at once with your programming choices.

I'd like to see everyone insulting TV3 do a better job of producing programmes and managing a station!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

I see great potential here for a focal use series -

Episode 2: Big English language words - focal use?

I shouldn't be putting ideas in their head [sic] really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 456 ✭✭aine-maire

    It's cúpla focal. Here.
I would've said 'twas because in Irish when two nouns come together the genetive case applies to the second... Think they justify it a little differently here though.

    Documentaries?

Why would I attempt to run a television station if I know I am not able to do so. The people in charge there now should be thinking the same way.

TV3 is lazy scheduling. Countless ****e simulcasted with ITV.

I had a big long post to reply to this and it got deleted, damn it! :pac:

I don't agree with TV3 having lazy scheduling. I think there's a variety of programmes on that channel to suit a variety of people's needs.
As with other TV stations, you're not going to like every programme or series they show, but they're trying to appeal to certain sections of the population with each programming decision.

I think between RTE 1, Network 2, TV3 and TG4 there's a lot of good TV to suit quite a lot of Irish people's interests. I think there's a good range of different programmes on each station and it's obvious that all the stations make an effort to cater for every age demographic and social group in their programming.

I can understand why people would criticise RTE because it's paid for by the state, using taxpayers money. RTE has a responsibility to provide for the Irish people.TV3 is a privately owned company.
