This has the makings of a great game. Laois hurling and GAA was going backwards for a few years post 2003. Hurlers lost James Young and footballers rested on their laurels. Laois hurling was dire up until 2008.

What appeared to be out of the blue last year Laois were hurling again and firing on all cylinders. They should have beaten Limerick last year in the qualifiers and the squad looks united. Carlow have made massive strides in the last 3 years too.

If Laois did not have that good year last year, I'd fancy Carlow. As it is Laois should win this handily. I think Laois are a genuinely good hurling county with fine hurlers. I think they are where Dublin were 3 years ago. If the progress continues over the coming years Leinster could be a 4 way contest between Dublin, Kilkenny, Galway and Laois. Laois are certainly moving the right way, lets hope it continues.

Its great to be back playing Leinster Championship hurling but I fear for us on Saturday evening.

Looking at some of our challenge games last week we are well off form. Got well beaten by Waterford and Offaly and we also lost to a Wexford side we beat in the league. The drop off in our level of play started with the last day league loss at home to Laois. A lot of the players seem to have gone off form, plus a few injuries in vital positions means I am expecting the worst Saturday evening.
Hope I am proven very wrong.

Would be great to see Carlow or Laois have a good run in Leinster. The more competitive Leinster is the better

Laois will not win this match easily. People are forgetting how competitive Carlow have been at underage the last few years. Both sides are young, but Carlow have been doing better at underage and this will stand to them. I hope the ref does not ruin the contest and hopefully Laois will win.

This will be close enough and the winners should put it up to Dublin.

I was chatting to a friend of mine from Limerick who said that the current saga wouldn't end until after the first round of the qualifiers when Limerick lose to either Carlow or Laois, of course there is turmoil down there, but also shows that Carlow and Laois are constantly improving an should be challenging these teams in the upper echelons of the hurling world.

I think in years to come Carlow and Laois may put it up to the bigger teams but Dublin with the squad they have at the moment should win easily enough.
Paul Ryan another great addition to the squad and can see Dublin gettting af few goals in this one.

I'd be thinking Laois will win this one but they won't get anything easy from Carlow who have a solid defence and a good freetaker , however Laois have a stronger team named for Sunday than they had for much of the league and that should ensure the win .

anyone know how laois have been going in challenges over last few weeks?
i think carlow have dropped back a bit since thier matches over wexford/clare in the league. hard too see carlow winning now but i wouldnt be too surprised if they did

In 2008 there were only 5 teams in Leinster, and even then it wasnt a 4 way contest.
    There are currently 8 teams in Leinster at the moment;
Antrim, Carlow, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly and Wexford.
Laois may be the 5th best county there, but you will see Sunday two weeks time the massive difference that exists at the moment between 4th and 5th.

If there is to be a four way contest, it will be Kilkenny, Galway, Wexford, and Dublin (in that order) if Dublin continue making progress.

It will be a VERY long time before Laois are to the standard needed to give Galway or Kilkenny a "contest". I was at the match last year that saw Laois go down 0-17 to Galway's 5-29

I'd take your points but I'd disagree. I am going mostly by direction the various counties are going. Wexford have been going backwards for years and are most certainly behind Dublin in Leinster. Offaly have been going backwards as well although playing top flight hurling this year should stand to them for a few years. Last year Laois should have beaten a strong Limerick team, and made the all Ireland quarter final. Whereas Wexford lost to Carlow this year in the league. Laois are a coming team, I can see them in the league final next year with a chance of promotion. I also think they will give the Dubs one hell of a game.

I was also talking about a few years time. Currently Wexford are ahead of Laois but for how long?

The League means nothing. I was also at the Laois - Limerick game. Yes Laois were ahead for something like 60mins; but it was due to a gaol in the opening seconds and I remember praying for the clock to go faster for all 60 of those minutes. We werent the better team on the day, and iirc there were some injuries and it was pissing rain. Not a great game of hurling.

I will not be bothering with Laois v Dublin if its in Tullamore, not going that far out of my way to see a slaughter

Wexford and Offaly are well ahead of Laois, nevermind Dublin, who will take them by 5-10 points when they meet.

In hurling the league is huge. If a team is away from division 1 and playing the likes of Kerry and Westmeath instead of Kilkenny, Galway, Cork, Tipp it places them at a huge disadvantage when they play these teams and they get hockeyed by the above teams. Last time Dublin were in division 2 they lost to Westmeath in the championship. Dublin's status as an improving county would not have happened if they were in division 2. Playing in division 1 at a higher intensity is what you want.

Laois have a while yet to go before we take a big scalp, we are going in the right direction though. The Setanta programme (underage county development squads) are due in to minor level soon and this is where the seeds of success could be sown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

What exactly is the Setanta programme, and how different is it to what Laois were doing before underage and how different is it to what major counties like Kilkenny do?

    Lets try this:

    Dublin

    Offaly/Wexford

    Laois

In order of hurling ability. Understood?

Okay get that. Misread your post to say Wexford and Offaly are ahead of Laois, nevermind Dublin. No harm done.
