i live close by,don't like it,not much too it,so much so that i havn't even enquired about membership, compared to Greystones it's way behind

it's just beside the sea but it's not a links(?),it's mostly open, gets really hard in good weather and that's what makes it tricky
i'll be honest i wouldn't get out of bed to play it,the type of course you could score very well on(like last summer i shot -1 including 2 eagles)but still not feel like you plyed well
i've heard it's a good club, not a bad bunch but you'll need more than that if you're thinking of joining

if you're in the area looking for membership i'm in the same boat, have a country membership but next year will join somewhere

Thanks indeed. Yeah in the same boat as yourself Heavy. Nothing so far has grabbed my attention, played druids Heath, didn't really warm to it truth be told.

Have you any background on some other places in North Wicklow? Djouce, Roundwood etc...

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely nothing except I'd like to get out in the evenings after work for nine holes. I can't travel all the way down to Ballinlough Castle after work. Its just too far when your up at 4.30am.

Wouldn't bother my backside joining either of the above for starters,
I'm looking for a decent member owned club with a decent junior section as i've 2 boys 1 is ten and is quite good, broke 100 in Kilcoole last week (off the ladies)which i thought was good
Would join Greystones but they're too expensive, approx 9-11k i think, spread over 5 years if you like
Wicklow golf club i heard are doing €3 k deal which includes your firsy year sub(not everyone's cup of tea)
I have heard that Blainroe will open the fllod gates a bit next year but not sure how accurate that is
Glen of the Downs, hate the course myself so that's out
Kilcoole my local course is nice but it's a nine hole so no thanks

Will keep looking ,if you hear any offers let me know,ta

My situation is a little different, will definitely be here for the next two years or so, but I can't commit to anywhere long term due to the nature of my job.

A large entrance fee is a no no.

I will inform you if I see anything of interest but I'm beginning to lose hope.

To think if you lived in the north west you could join any number of quality links for a fraction of the price. This east coast is far too expensive. I guess its supply and demand.

why can you not play junior cup as a country member does your current club not allow it. You,d think they would be glad to have a 5 handicapper available to them.

I quite like Charlesland. It's far from the greatest course in the world, but there are some interesting holes on it - the stretch from 10-13 in particular.

Any idea on the cost of membership?

The last i heard it was €16,000 for ordinary, then €1,700 or so per year.

Five day is about €11,000 and €1,200.

    Altogether now...

I wouldn't play Charlesland every week even if they payed ME €1200 a year. :)

What about South County for you lads? Not a million miles away. Its like €1600 a year or something along those lines, grand course.

Powerscourt, if your rich! Its like 2 and a half grand a year..

Really like Blainroe, I'd keep an eye on that joining fee if i were you.

2 small kids and a busy job won't allow it,you need to be around for practice etc,it's a no no

Cheers Jimjo. Its 6 g's at the minute. I played South County, not a bad track at all. Not too far but a 3g fee to join at the minute. Given I'm unlikely to be here in 3 or 4 years time its not worth it.

Maybe the boys that are members there can clear this one up? But I thought you could join for a yearly sub rate without the joining fee, I might be wrong though.

what your hcp OP,if i was in your boat i would be all over Druids Heath,it grows on ye,i live close by,got out for a few games last year,if you get it on a nice summers evening the place is magic, also the fact that the ball travels a bit more helps
the only reason i'm not joining is they've no team and i want the inter club competition
also the fact that you'll only be here for a few years added to the fact that it will be good for your game playing there for a couple of years

Handicap is 19, playing about a year and a half or so. Pretty decent tee to green, not long though but getting a bit more length gradually, but its around the green that I'm poor and I'm aware the only way I'll improve is playing regularly.

In fairness I played Druids Heath on a very windy day. Struggled to reach the Par 3's with Hybrid. Some very long par 4's. Just struggled around. No doubt it'd be good for my game. Only problem seems to be no midweek comps. Weekends aren't always great for me. There also seemed to be no people on the course. Club house dead etc... Just didn't warm to it at all. Maybe I should give it another chance.

There are some annual memberships available in South County at the moment. The sub is somewhere in the region of €1600 with no joining fee.

There are a couple of different options available for joining SC. You have 5 day, yearly, lease of member. Call the club and they will go through your options. I know of at least one lease available.

Have to say Charlesland is a very poor track... I wouldn't join it in a million years...... good value out there but you need a competitive playing membership

Druids Heath Annual 7 day membership fee 1500 euro and as far as I know there is no joining fee
We Believe You'll Enjoy Druids Heath So Much that You'll Seriously Think About Being a Member…At €1500 p.a. it's a Tremendous Value.

Would you not consider Arklow Heavyballs?? I think this is pound for pound the best option out there right now. You can join Bray for 5k but I dont think the place is upto much !! Other than them two you will need to do some travelling.

I asked Charlesland last week and its a 3k Joining fee and 2k per year! Myself Living in Greystones and looking for a club.. i cant see any better offers than Druids Heath at the moment! or am i wrong?

2k per year is very pricey.
It's a rubbish course IMO, especially the back 9.
Only one nice hole on the whole course I think and that's hole No. 9 Par 5.

Djouce is 9 hole, so for some that'd be out. As far as I know they've an active membership and they used to have a midweek comp in the summer.

yea i imagine id get bored of 9 holes very quickly! Dunlaoghaire is a Rip i suppose with its 27 holes...!?

Last year Charlesland released 30 memberships at 3000, was oversubscribed, Bray had 50 full memberships at 5000 which included the years sub of 1500, the ended up taking in over 70 new members. If you wait until around nov/Dec, clubs will probably be offering membership at decent prices because they will lose members who have fallen on hard times and cannot renew.

As far as I know the Druids Heath offer is on a year to year basis, you have no security, if they get into trouble, you will find yourself out on your ear. Better to go to a members club.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 717 ✭✭✭jimjo

So is the course in good condition? From what I hear its a little short in places? I'm sure with the prices they charge for membership the course must be in decent nick!

members club ? Druids Heat from what I understand is in very fine health. its 1500 per annum and is well worth the money in my opinion, at least you get to play a real golf course. Charlesland in my opinion is far from a proper golf course, nice facilities etc but dont rate the golf course at all and for the money they ask to join I would be looking elsewhere !! Again just my opinion

Members club as in a club owned by the members, Druids Heath is a commercial enterprise, you have no security of membership there, other than to the end of the subscription year you have paid for. If it was sold the new owners could ask you for a hefty joining fee or you leave, that would be the choice. I'm not saying that will happen, only that it could.

I know you didnt mean it like that but what about all the other clubs who have taken on members, say members clubs like Macreddin, Heritage, Tulfarrris etc who have gone into receivership and their invested money has been taken with no come back ??? By the way I am not a member of the Heath either

anyone who would invest money in Charlsland would be mad imo,the €1500 for the heath is great value,in the current climate you don't really need security by joining a very poor course just to become a member, the €1500 is for a years golf,if after the year it closes(not likely at all)move on.

btw played the heath last week and it's in super nick,i'm joining next year,it's a real test also, couple of par 4's 460,470

it's defo good value, the only reason i'm picking The Heath is because it's so close to my house and with young kids this is a big help,if you don't mind the drive Arklow's a great shout
the only problem with Arklow in the past was it was so busy in the summer you had to have your name down super quick for Sunday or you'd miss out, there are a few members on here, maybe they could advise if this has improved

I will admit you do have to be on the ball when the timesheet opens, but saying that i have been a member 4 and a half years and never had a problem getting out at any time, midweek or weekend.

Out in 4 Balls,it can take between 4 and 4 and a half hours,a little longer for a medal i.e cause its strokes

Just add to what people have been saying on the last page...

The heath despite being a great course and great value. I've found since joining that there is never a problem getting out for a few holes at short notice. Also during the weekend comp I've only found that 1 out of the 6 I've played had slow play involved.

Ive played Charlesland twice recently at the earlybird price of 20 euro, and to be honest its all I think that its worth.
It's a very short course. Bar the 18th an 1 or 2 others you'd get by with 3 clubs.. driver, wedge and putter. That said tho it is in good nick I suppose ,although the greens are like concrete there so hard.

1 other point to add about the heath. As a member to bring a guest its 45euro, which is a bit of an anoyance cause I've loads a m8s who would like to play but find that a bit dear.

that's a bit steep Noel alright, won't be bringing me for a free round then;)
i think i will join the heath next year,is there enough low lads who would form a decent junior side? i play off 5 and that would entice me to join more,my son is 11 and is quite good, can children join as i've never seen kids up there playing,i'm always up at the range,a great facility to have
