Can anyone offer any advice / tips for camping in Northern France?

We are travelling by ferry at the start of August for 2 weeks, unfortunately the busiest time.... Should we book in advance, or can we just wing it & turn up? We will have all our own gear.

No agenda whatsoever as of yet, so we're open to all ideas!

Any info greatly appreciated, tnx :)

I don't know much about Brittnay but we always stayed a little further south in the Vendee and even further south in Royan.

Im actually driving there myself in a few weeks.

So unless somebody comes back with the answers your looking for then consider the Vendee and the Royan region. My favourite places are in and around Les Sables Dolonne and around La Rochelle.

This year Im staying in Jard Sur Mer and La Palyrme in camping sites but in a mobile home.

Pitches will be full in August and its worth your while checking the school holidays in whatever region you check because you may have french schools breaking for summer holidays. They get very little holidays in france(right too) and stagger them across the country so beware.

Websites for campsites are very thin on the ground and rarely in English so it may be hard. You could just turn up because popular beach locations will have numerous campsites so you could be lucky.

We camped in France for about twenty years and only stopped about 4 or 5 years ago.

For the last few years I used this company - http://www.select-site.com/ and found them very easy to deal with. You pay a bit for the service, and it was always priced in sterling which was irritating but no more. We only used the site booking part and I sorted out my own ferry crossings.

I think it depends a lot on what you are after in a site whether pre-booking is necessary. In the early days of camping holidays when we used two and three star sites I never recall booking, and I only remember being turned away once or twice. Once the daughters got bigger, and on-site facilities mattered more, and we went to four star sites, I usually pre-booked. Even then you would often find that from day to day there were vacancies on the site.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for, have you kids etc? Brittany is a wonderful place. It's the best part of France that is not actually quite France. You'll see. Half way between Mont St Michel and St Malo. Maybe this is what you are looking for. I would recommend booking in advance.

    Hope this helps
