Teeth Grinding....

    Hi,

I've recently noticed that I have started to grind my teeth during the night. I often wake myself up doing this. I wasn't too concerned until I started to chip a couple of teeth. I have no idea why this started and I'm getting a bit worried about it. I went to my dentist who didn't seem too concerned and told me it should go away by itself. It hasn't, I actually think it's getting worse. Should I go to another dentist or am I over reacting??

Thanks for reading and any help is much appreciated!!

I do this as well, and a few years ago I went to the dentist and she told me that I had all sorts of minor cracks and whatnot in my teeth/fillings (she took xrays and they were on all sides). I got a splint made in the end which I still wear, and so far haven't had similar problems with damaging my teeth. It's annoying having to wear it, but worth it.

My last visit to a dentist a week ago, he mentioned he had the same problem but got hypnotherapy to solve it :p Sounds interesting.

Hi, I grind my teeth really badly and have chipped them quite a few times. I got a nightguard made by my dentist - 250 euro - and ground through it in no time! Got another firmer one made but am gradually grinding through this as well. The only thing I can say is that while the nightguard seems to protect my front teeth from being chipped, I seem to be displacing pressure onto my molars and have broken one molar filling now 3 times which my dentist says is from the pressure and I now need a crown at the cost of over a thousand euros. So my teeth grinding is turning out to be a very expensive habit. The best solution would obviously be to stop doing it. I'm pretty sure it is stress related and I think I will explore the hypnotherapy or other stress relief options from now on because to be honest the nightguard solution is not entirely successful for me. Good luck.

OMG  that sounds quite severe.

I clench rather than grind and also got a night gaurd which i used for a while and it seems to have broken the habit.

I have heard that a good hypnotist can help with night grinding. I would look for a reliable personal recommendation for one if you decide to give it a try.

Spend 300-500 euro on a all acrylic hard night guard. Will last for years, and is less likely to increase the grinding unlike a soft splint. There was a thread here not long ago about it which was good.
