Expecting an announcement anytime from May 19th during Googles I O conference. Hopefully it's ready to roll and will be available shortly after any announcement.

Afaik you'll have to wait for htc to release it for the Desire.

Nexus One owners will get it straight off ;)

    Tomorrow! (or the day after)

Full flash 10.1 support and a 450% performance increase, sounds good.

nexus one gets it tomorrow I reckon. Personally think (hope!) that htc will also release this rather quickly for the desire and legend - paving the way for their 2.1 update for the hero :D

^ please let that be true!!

The Desire kernel source has been released, so HTC or no HTC, there will be custom 2.2 ROMS for the Desire in very sort order.

I think it will come out on the Hero sooner rather than later too. Its the only feasible reason that they've delayed Eclair so long.

Anyone know if proxy support will be added in 2.2?

All the Hero has to benefit is the JIT compiler with FroYo 2.2 though. I wouldn't put it past HTC to leave it at 2.1

On the nexus will it just magically appear :) like the last update, or do i need to do something to download it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

JIT makes a big difference to the handset speed. I did some beta testing on a rom called Superhero and it was bloody fast. It was a bit unstable, so I didn't keep it.

I would imagine it'll appear in the same way as the last update which means it could take a week or two before it filters down to everyone.

Or sooner if you have a rooted phone ;)

All those Nexus Ones are running 2.2, the Nexus One with 2.1 only manages 7.06 That's where everyone is saying it's 4.5X faster.

I'm not convinced that FroYo will get a full release this week. It's supposed to ship with Flash 10.1, but the Flash android Beta hasn't even started yet.

So either we're all getting it this week, packaged with the Beta, or a select group of users and developers will get 2.2 plus Flash 10.1 beta and the rest of us will have to wait until the official Flash 10.1 release in June.

And then, for those of us on a Desire/Legend there's the question of what HTC will do. Even if they adapt the Sense UI quickly, will they roll out Froyo with flash still in Beta?

    Aaagh.

Tbh I don't care about flash. Just give me a snappier phone asap.

I hear ya! Flash isn't a deal breaker but quicker processing is definitely looked forward to.

Actually now that I think about it... I'll cut that 4X speed increase for double the speed and double the battery life.

    That's gonna be tough =/

The speed increase is all because of how it executes the code so technically it's not using any more raw processing power but it still manages to do far more work. So technically since it takes less clock cycles to get something done then there should be a small battery increase.

If you install an undervolted kernel it will help battery life a lot.

Me too - but the screen us the real battery killer. That's hardly going to change.

Come on paid apps in the marketplace :)

    The screen?

Depends I guess. TFT Screens you're probably right but the AMOLED screens found on the Desire, Legend and Nexus One hardly use any power at all even on full brightness.

When I look at the "settings" > "About" > "Battery Usage" screen it always shows the screen as by far the biggest drain on the battery - typically 70 % for me on level one brightness.

Again it depends on the phone, my phone says 5% and that's on maximum brightness. It's an AMOLED on a dark background so it hardly uses any power.

The desires screen will still eat a battery. The biggest savings in power with AMOLED is with black backgrounds, where you'll see a reduction in power consumption of about 70%, anything else is a saving of about 10-15%, while white backgrounds will actually draw more power than other displays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭djgaillimh

    Test that out!

On full brightness it uses about 20% of your battery. That's better than some, but it's still a lot of juice. Putting the brightness at 0-15% saves me about 2 or 3 hours battery life.

That's true, I was using the live grass wallpaper and it takes up far more battery during the day when the grass is green and the sky is blue (I'm talking about the wallpaper obviously ;)) but i've been using the nexus one live wallpaper for the last few days and it's improved battery life quite a bit.

Depends on what wallpaper you use, light wallpapers use noticeably more power than a dark one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭djgaillimh

Well this is from personal experience. I have a dark background and when I had brightness at full it was still hogging the battery. Up to 20/25% at times.

The problem is that when your display is on, there's a pretty good chance you're going to be browsing or using twitter or playing games or whatever. Wallpaper colour doesn't make much of a difference in everyday use... not unless you're spending a lot of time just staring at your wallpaper and flipping back and forth between homescreens. Which I think we all probably did when we first got our phones.

I've brightness at the medium level on the N1 and it's using 29% of battery and my live wallpaper,EarthRot is using 7%. I've noticed the grass live wallpaper seems to sap the juice alright.

Right now I've been browsing for half an hour just after overnight charging.
It's Display 81, Browser 8, Android System at 6 and a couple of small entries.

Obviously that Display figure will go down during the day when I'm not using the phone but it's still going to be a big percentage.

Now, back on topic .... nothing but a weak update to Gesture Search this morning.

    Roll on 5 pm !

Ah! Why is it called Froyo?? I see mentioned above that it won't be on Desire for a while, but will it be possible to put it on a rooted desire? Will it be likely to save battery? Also, I heard 720p video recording is possible on the desire camera, will it add that? :)

720p will come from a htc update, not from froyo, though it may be packaged in the official HTC froyo update.

So the desire IS capable of it? Cool :) Why they don't just add such a thing from conception is beyond me, it would surely be a another great selling point?

So will a rooted desire be able to update to Froyo immediately I wonder? :)

Google are using sweets/desserts/pastries in alphabetical order as their naming convention. e.g.

    Cupcake
    Donut
    Eclair
    Froyo
    Gingerbread.

1 - The Google I/O 2010 Wave is worth checking out as it will be used by people at the event in conjunction with google moderator for talking notes and asking questions.

http://code.google.com/events/io/2010/wave.html - or just search for it in wave and follow inscructions in the actual wave.
If you are on a mac i would recomend safari as it wont crash and chrome will - doesnt make sense but trust me.

    1.5 - http://www.youtube.com/GoogleDevelopers - watch live from youtube.

2 - I would keep an eye on live.twit.tv between 5-6.30 gmt because Leo Laporte will be probaly getting a live stream of a/the keynote.

2.5 - Then between 9-10.30 talking to Gina Trapani (Developer-Lifehacker founder etc) live from the event during the ''this week in google podcast''.

I notice on the schedule that the android office hours aren't until tomorrow.

I wonder does this mean the 2.2 announcment will be during the second keynote tomorrow? We'll find out in a few hours, I guess.

I have a funny feeling that 2.2's announcement probably isn't today. Today's speech may be more out chrome OS.

Just saw HTC announced that 2.1 is now on HTC Hero Spirit or whatever it was. Strange time to be releasing 2.1 if 2.2 is coming for the rest of us?

They've been working on it for ages :D

2.2 Vanilla is coming but 2.2 Htc sense wont be out until Htc has got their hands on 2.2 and do their changes for sense

I doubt the Hero will be getting 2.2 anyway so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Well, today's keynote seems to be about HTML5. Boring. Guess we were right, Android will be tomorrow.
