Hey, heading off on my J1 soon enough. Just wondering how would I go about opening an US bank account? Ordered the US ATM card go for less are selling, but it seems to be a bit useless!

Edit- Bad spelling mistake in title, should read J1!

You can find free banking in the US. You should not have to pay to open a bank account. They're charging you for convenience I believe but if you get over and have a few days before you require a bank account you can go hunting for the free ones and open it in the US.

Where abouts are you going? One thing to take into consideration is that most if not all ATMs will charge you to take out money unless it is the your bank. So if you will be taking out cash a lot make sure there are plenty of ATMs in your city/town. However, I take out cash probably once every two weeks. Almost everywhere takes card for everything and you can get cash back in most supermarkets!

Look for annual fees, you should be able to find a bank without these, and look for special incentives to open an account. Sometimes banks will offer $100 or something to have a bank account open for a certain time with bill paying linked to it. If you can, it's a good opportunity.
