    Is Limerick city or Galway, Irelands third largest city in the republic?

    And is it true that Raheen and Dooradoyle are not counted in the citys population?!

    The city boundary ends at the Groody River in Castletroy and the new flyover at the Crescent Shopping centre.

    So yes, it's true that Dooradoyle, Raheen, Castletroy and Monaleen are in the county, as well as half of Corbally (Shannon Banks and Westbury) being in Clare.

    So if you take the official "city" figures, Limerick is now smaller than Galway (i.e. 4th largest).

    If you take "city + suburbs" - i.e. including Dooradoyle, Raheen, Castletroy, Monaleen, Shannon Banks, Westbury, etc - Limerick is larger than Galway (i.e. 3rd largest).

    this is true, at the moment it stands at around 50,000, if the proposed boundary extension went ahead that was put up a few years ago;

    figures here.

    Its a play on numbers/city limits which Galway is doing quite well off. Suits the Governments "spatial" strategy as well.

    Cork city has a population of just under 120,000

    The urban population of Cork, similar to the Dooradoyles etc in Limerick, comes to around 90,000. The Metropolitan areas around Cork city have a pretty big population too.

    Limerick has a city population of just over 52,000 and an urban population of just under 91,000.

    So if both Cork and Limerick had their boundaries changed, Limerick still would not come close.

    oh i know, cork has i think 119 or 113,000 in the city boundary, Limerick has 52,000..if Limerick was to be extended to the size of the proposed boundary shown in my first post the population would be much greater than 90,000, i think 120 or 130,000 as it extends way beyond the urban area, so technically it would overtake cork..eventhough cork would be much bigger..kinda like the situation with Limerick and galway at the mo
