Quick question, quick answer, hopefully . . . Why is the 'Irish Independent' called the Indo?

In Britain, for as long as I can remember 'The Independent' newspaper has always been known as 'The Inde' > Why? because if you fold it in half it becomes 'The Inde~pendent'. Where does the letter 'O' come from in The Irish Independent ???

Dubliners often end abbreviations or nicknames with an 'o'. Also papersellers on the streets may have referred to it as such.
