vodafone sim cards and iphones

My dad pays an average of about 70euro a month with his Vodafone bill. I am a prepay customer. My dad wouldn't be interested in having an iphone but can get an upgrade for 200euro. I was thinking, if it was possible, that I give him the money for the phone and we swap phones. He keeps mine - I get his iphone. Does anyone know if this is possible? Can we just simply swap sim cards.

I would be grateful for any response. :)

If you are on vodafone yes.... any other provider no.

Yes Barry, you can do this but here are the problems with that idea.

Firstly your dad would have to change to an iPhone plan, which are more expensive and as you say your dad doesn't care about the phone, he would also have 2gb download allowance which would go to waist.

Secondly, as a pay as you go customer, you would loose a fortune in credit every time you checked your email or replied to and IM when not on WiFi and by a fortune I mean €20 could be gone in an hour of surfing.

Thirdly, you would need your fathers sim card to activate it every time you needed to do a restore, and without it or another Vodafone iPhone sim, you will not be able to activate it, even with all the latest JB'ing. Your phone would have the new bootrom so wouldn't be able to hacktivate.

My advice is to buy and unlocked Jailbroken iPhone with an earlier bootrom off ebay, would solve most of your problems, and would end up cheaper than your dad paying excess billing charges for 18 months.

you can get 50mb of data for 99c a day on vodafone pay as you go (more than enough for surfing and email etc.). and you can use any vodafone sim to activate or restore the iphone. I agree your dad could be spending a bit more on the iphone tarriffs. but he may be on an old plan and some of the lower iphone plans may cover his needs even if he doesnt use the data.

Thanks for your replies. They're great. I didn't think it would be possible to do that.

I think I will go ahead with idea of my dad getting upgrade. Firstly, when I called Vodafone they said he could go on the 45euro a month plan as that would suit the minutes he would use. Apparently, he's on some really old plan is being overcharged completely. Secondly, I have access to Wifi at home and in work so I won't be browsing via the Vodafone network.

Just have to save up the 200euro now. Although, does anyone know if you can negotiate with Vodafone. We've both been customers for well over 10 years and both have Vodafone broadband at home. I reckon between the pair of us, we put the guts of 200euro into their coffers every month. Would they ever give a free upgrade considering loyalty and the money they're getting of us???

yes, as long as you set up the vodaphone live proxy, which can only be done with strong ssh knowledge and will not allow for push

I have been told that the live apn is the one that's used in the carrier settings. And can vouch that's all I'm being charged when using it.

Your correct, live is the in the carrier settings that will sync onto the phone when you connect to itunes, you can sign up to vodafone 360 and for 39cent a day you get 100mb of data per day so a little over 12€ per month.

Definately try it. There is some pay plans that give iPhones for free so have a look on the website. Go into the shop and haggle with them. And definately say about your Dad being overpriced for a while they might cave.

You will have to forgive me, I bought my iphone from o2 and unlocked it back in the 3.0 days. I'm on the €20 (100 min, 100 text, infinite calls to vodafone) with €8 isp promo, so I can only vouch for the people I help out with there phones. My settings are visible in the APN settings section. A friend of mine was having problems with her internet so I inputed the isp.vodafone.ie settings, not the live setting into her phone. I then rang vodafone to make sure that she was entitled to use the isp APN, which they said the carrier bundel contained that info. So as you can only use one APN at a time, how does the phone have the carrier settings for LIVE?

I would be aware that this may not be the case.

Also, How can one put a proxy into the carrier bundle now?

Just because you are being charged does not mean you are correct. The fact that push notifications work is a little bit odd as the vodafone live proxy only allows access to port 80 and 443, push notifications run on port 2195, which is blocked by the proxy. I'm very much willing to be proven wrong on this one.

Does email work, as in the mail app, because back when I was on iPhone 2g/3g I used Live and the mail app didnt work, if it does then you carrier bundle settings are wrong, and you are really on the ISP

When you connect to itunes with a vodafone sim it should prompt you to accept the vodafone carrier files - did your's? Mine did but i refused it.
This carrier update makes Live the APN for the iphone and vodafone prefer you use the Live APN on iphones.
Yes only one APN at a time.

push works fine on .mac account.... mail works fine.. I only use it as a spare iphone as my bill iphone is with 02. I use it for data roaming as its only 99c a day for that too... definitely on the live apn but in saying that i'm manually entering it as i didnt trust the carrier bundle settings but have been assured they are the live settings too.

Vodafone removed the requirement to use the Live proxy in July or August last year.

All Vodafone iPhones (or unlocked ones using the Vodafone Ireland carrier file as installed by iTunes in any iPhone) will use the Live APN (with no proxy) for handset internet and MMS, and the 'Office' APN for tethering.
Thus data roaming for Pay Monthly customers comes from the inclusive data bundle for 'Live' use, or for PAYG customers, a 99cent per day (or cheaper rate if on 360) applies.

For those on Pay Monthly plans without a data bundle, then either of the add-on bundles (what was the 1GB ISP promo, and the former 500MB Mobile Internet addon which now is 1GB as well) include access to the Live APN (but not necessarily other APNs).

Also, if Vodafone wanted to get fussy about APNs, then technically (according to the T&Cs for the iPhone price plans) customers on an iPhone price plan are restricted to only use the Live APN. However at present the billing system allows use of HS & ISP still but if you read the T&Cs it clearly says Live only.

Those are the accurate facts of the present day situation
